Battleground Maps Show Trump Starts General Election With Significant Challenge

NBC News is out with their first electoral college projection map for the 2016 presidential race, and it shows Donald Trump and the Republicans begin with a much steeper, uphill climb than Hillary Clinton and the Democrats.

From NBC News:

That map gives Clinton and the Democrats a 253-190 edge in electoral votes, with 95 in the tossup column.

And here’s why Dems have the advantage: They surpass the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency by just winning one of Florida or Ohio.

Or a combination of Colorado and Virginia.

One other thing: Our Tossup designations are very conservative; it’s where we think things *could* be later this summer. But right now, there are more polls showing Clinton ahead in these states than ones with Trump leading.

The Washington Post posits a similar situation, albeit from a different angle.

Were Hillary to win the 19 states (and D.C.) that every Dem has won since 1992, she gets to 242 electoral votes. If she wins Florida’s 29 electoral votes – Boom! She reaches 271 and the presidency. Clinton currently leads Trump by 13 in Florida according to a recent poll.

Additionally, Hillary currently leads in the ten most likely “swing” states.

However you slice it, the Trumpster begins with a tough map to overcome.

The Hill: Trump’s VP Top 10 Contenders

Political news website The Hill shares this video round-up of what the folks there think will be Donald Trump’s “Top Ten” Choices for running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

On the list: Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Marco Rubio, John Kasich, Newt Gingrich, Florida Gov. Rick Scott, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, and retired USMC Gen. James “Mad Dog” Mattis.

You’ll note at least 4-5 of these folks have pointed declared in the past that they have no interest in the veep spot.

We shall see.

Hillary Launches Devastating Attack Ad Using GOP Candidates’ Statements

Oh yeah, Hillary Clinton was ready for this day. The day Donald Trump actually became the Republican nominee for president.

This ad practically wrote itself.

Using language straight out of not only The Donald’s mouth, but his primary season opponents, Mitt Romney calls Trump a misogynist, Marco Rubio claims he’s the most “vulgar person to ever aspire to the presidency,” and Jeb Bush says Trump needs therapy.

Just put this on repeat for the next six month.

The New York Daily News writes the obituary on the Republican Party as Donald Trump secures the GOP nomination for president

Of course it is one thing to win a nomination and another to get the 50 million more votes that you need to become President.

Only Trump himself knows if he really thought he could pull this off. He says he did, that the only thing that surprised him, as he said to me months ago, was “how quickly it happened.” No one will ever know if he could have gotten to where he is without the low blows.

But the reason he thinks he can beat Hillary Clinton is because he just put an entire political party out of business. Republican Party. Just put an “i” in the middle. So the initials read this way: R.I.P.

Donald Trump: Lyin’ Ted Is Becoming “More And More Unhinged”

During an interview with “Fox & Friends” this morning, Donald Trump took some swings at opponent Ted Cruz which included parroting a recent National Enquirer article citing Cruz’s father, Rafael Cruz, linking him to President John F. Kennedy’s assassin.

This was, predictably, followed by Cruz responding to the accusation:

“This man is a pathological liar. He doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies,” Cruz said at a press conference. “He lies — practically every word that comes out of his mouth.”

At various points, he called Trump a “narcissist” and “serial philanderer” and said “morality doesn’t exist” for him.

Cruz also responded at length to the Republican presidential frontrunner’s suggestion earlier in the day that Cruz’s father, Rafael Cruz, was somehow linked to Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin of President John F. Kennedy.

The Texas senator mocked Trump’s suggestions, going on a sarcastic riff to lump in Trump with famous conspiracy theorists.

“Yes, my dad killed JFK. He’s secretly Elvis. And Jimmy Hoffa is buried in his backyard,” Cruz said.

And, of course, The Donald wasn’t about to let Cruz have the last word. Said Trump:

Ted Cruz is a desperate candidate trying to save his failing campaign. It is no surprise he has resorted to his usual tactics of over-the-top rhetoric that nobody believes.

Over the last week, I have watched Lyin’ Ted become more and more unhinged as he is unable to react under the pressure and stress of losing, in all cases by landslides, the last six primary elections — in fact, coming in last place in all but one of them.

Today’s ridiculous outburst only proves what I have been saying for a long time, that Ted Cruz does not have the temperament to be President of the United States.

Needless to say, all eyes are on the primary in Indiana tonight as pundits and pols are watching to see if Trump can score a decisive victory in an attempt to shut out Cruz from any delegates.

Super-Statistician Nate Silver Predicts Crushing Win By Hillary Clinton

Super-stats guy Nate Silver tweeted out this prediction of the general election (if the voting were held today) predicting a crushing defeat for Donald Trump.

You need 270 electoral votes to win the White House.

Nate Silver predicted 49 of 50 states in the 2008 presidential election.

In 2012, Silver predicted all 50 states in the presidential election.

I’m not nearly the genius Silver is but I’m not so bullish on Georgia and North Carolina.

That being said, Hillary would still win big even without those two states. I do think she will win handily.

We shall see how this all plays out…
