Broadway’s PIPPIN recoups $8.5 million investment

According to the New York Times, the Tony Award winning musical-comedy Pippin, which is currently playing at the Music Box Theatre (239 West 45th Street), has recouped its Broadway investment of $8.5 million. The production opened on April 25, 2013.

I saw the production during the month leading up to the Tony Awards this year and it was clearly one of the best productions I’ve seen on Broadway in many years.  Chet Walker’s award-winning choreography blew me away.  If you are in the area – and you can get tickets – GO!

Pippin is directed by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus and features choreography by Tony Award nominee Chet Walker in the style of Bob Fosse and circus creation byGypsy Snider of the Montreal-based circus company Les 7 doigts de la main (also known as 7 Fingers).

Terrific compilation of famous dance sequences in movies through the years

Saturday morning All-Dance!

Great compilation of dance throughout the years in the movies. And expertly edited to Kenny Loggins’ “Footloose.”

From almost 40 movies from dance movies to comedies, from Fred Astaire to Micheal Jackson. Can you name all the movies represented?

Travis Wall and friends dance their way through Bacchanal Buffet at Las Vegas’ Caesar’s Palace

In honor of the $17 million Bacchanal Buffet’s first birthday, Travis Wall of Fox’s hit show So You Think You Can Dance joined forces with Caesars Palace in creating this athletic dance number and video that showcases the talent, creativity and expertise of the dancers while highlighting the array of culinary offerings and the sleek design of the space.

From flipping off of the furniture to breathtaking pirouettes, dancing on the tables to synchronized plate manipulation, Wall expertly utilizes all of the artistic tools at his disposal to create a mesmerizing dance performance.

And he does so with a pretty spectacular cast of dancers well-known to the SYTYCD world: season one winner Nick Lazzarini; SYTYCD-finalist Kayla Radomski; SYTYCD All-Star Jaime Goodwin; SYTYCD alum Kayla Kalbfleisch and Channing Cooke; Dancer Adrian Lee, who appeared with Wall on his reality-based Oxygen channel show “All The Right Moves”, and world Champion gymnast Dom Palange, rounding out the skillful ensemble.

Wall’s dancing and choreography look terrific.  And you’ve got to admit the food does, too.  I’ve heard from friends today who’ve been to the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesar’s Palace that the food really is fantastic.  I clearly need to get over there.

Fire Island Dance Festival begins July 19th

The Fire Island Dance Festival returns July 19-21, and if you’ve not yet experienced it, this is the year. Performed outdoors against the background of the Fire Island Pines’ Great South Bay, this is one of the area’s great summer arts events.

Last year they raised more than $370,000 for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations.

“The Fire Island Dance Festival is a wonderful platform for so many artists to get to share their work with the Fire Island dance community,” says Kyle Abraham, one of the choreographers at this year’s show. “It’s just a wonderful venue — an opportunity to share your work.”

Starting at $125, with all proceeds going directly to the cause, showgoers can enjoy an open bar along with specially choreographed performances from renowned companies such as the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Broadway Dance Lab, and the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

“I want people to generally watch our work without any expectation,” Abraham says. “Because I’m always interested to see — whatever history you have before you watch our work, that’s always going to be embedded in how you’re viewing it.”
The weekend-long festival is produced by and benefits Dancers Responding to AIDS. Since its debut in 1995, Fire Island Dance Festival has raised more than $2.9 million.

Charlotte d’Amboise honored at 2013 Astaire Awards

Pippin star Charlotte d’Amboise and Motown player Eric LaJuan Summers took home the awards for Outstanding Female and Male Dancer in a Broadway show, respectively, at the 31st Annual Fred and Adele Astaire Awards. The ceremony was held June 3 at New York University’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.

Additionally, Pippin choreographer Chet Walker and Motown choreographers Patricia Wilcox and Warren Adams tied for Outstanding Choreographer of a Broadway show.

Sidi Larbi Cherkaouit took home the award for Outstanding Choreographer in a Feature Film.

I was fortunate to perform in CHICAGO the Musical many times with Charlotte – my favorite “Roxie.”  AND I’d followed and enjoyed her work for many years before and after.  MORE than deserving of the honor.  What a great, great theater artist.

Congrats to Charlotte and all the honorees!
