New York City: “Broadway Week” Jan 22 – Feb 7

Since this is historically a slow period for theater in New York City, Broadway is again celebrating their 2-for-1 “Broadway Week,” (which isn’t really one week but two).

You can now order tickets in advance at this link for almost 20 shows on Broadway. Many are long running hits, so if you haven’t made the time to go see WICKED, CHICAGO, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, MARY POPPINS, JERSEY BOYS or many others – now would be a fiscally sound time to do so 🙂

And if you HAVE seen all these fab shows, there’s “Off-Broadway Week” running Jan 28-Feb 10. Over 30 shows are participating in that promotion and you can check out those at this link.

Go see theater in New York City! Off or on Broadway, it’s fab!

Al Pacino revival of Glengarry Glen Ross recoups investment in weeks

The current Broadway revival of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross has already recouped it’s $3.3 million dollar investment in only a few weeks in spite of mixed reviews.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

“Despite mixed reviews for his performance, Pacino has also been the major draw in a production that has frequently grossed more than $1 million a week since opening on Dec. 8. Its cumulative box office is currently at $9.2 million. Those figures have been pumped significantly by premium seats selling for as much as $350 apiece.

“The negligible impact of reviews on the production can be seen in its grosses for the week ending Dec. 16, its first since the official opening. That tally of more than $1.2 million was the highest since the play began previews on Oct. 19.”

Some folks in the industry felt the current revival pales in comparison to the very strong 2005 production that starred Liev Schreiber and Alan Alda.

However, clearly it’s a good thing to have Al Pacino as your salesman.

The show continues on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater.

The return of American Dance Machine

In the 1970s and 1980s, the American Dance Machine was a major force in preserving choreography from significant Broadway musicals.  Now that idea has been resurrected in the form of American Dance Machine for the 21st Century.
American Dance Machine for the 21st Century, an organization committed to preserving the heritage of musical film and theatre choreography, will stage recreations of work by Susan Stroman, Jerome Robbins, Hermes Pan and Bob Fosse in a Manhattan workshop presentation Nov. 14 at New York City Center.

“Each piece has been coached by artists intimately involved in their original productions,” according to ADM21. Numbers from Broadway’s Contact, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway and Big Deal, as well as the film “Lovely to Look At,” will be presented. The evening is directed by artistic director Margo Sappington and will feature live music with musical direction by Eugene Gwozdz.

The 6 PM Nov. 14 show is presented at City Center’s Studio 4.

I actually got to see this short lived production.

Great voices and great score. The staging failed a bit, but the show had some thrilling moments.
