Happy birthday gorgeous! Barbra Streisand is 72 today!

It’s hard not to be awed by Barbra Joan Streisand’s talent, drive and achievements. I’ve been a fan as far back as I can remember.

In her first 72 years on the planet, Barbra has won two Academy Awards, eight Grammy Awards, five Emmy Awards including one Daytime Emmy, a Special Tony Award, an American Film Institute award, a Kennedy Center Honors award, a Peabody Award, and is one of the few entertainers who have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award.

She is one of the best selling female artists of all time, with more than 145 million records sold worldwide. She is the best-selling female artist on the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) Top Selling Album Artists list, the only female recording artist in the top ten, and the only artist outside of the rock and roll genre.

I wanted to post something to enjoy of hers, so below is Babs’ entire “One Voice” concert – a benefit concert at her Malibu, California home on September 6, 1986.

What a great star.  What a great talent.  Happy birthday Barbra Joan!

Happy birthday to Ian Ziering

Just one of many magazine covers that welcomed uber-fit Ian Ziering to Las Vegas in 2013

Today is Beverly Hills 90210/Sharknado star Ian Ziering’s birthday. And man, does he make 50 looks awesome.

I got to meet and get to know Ian last year when he came roaring into Las Vegas last year as the most successful guest host Chippendales had seen since beginning a practice of bringing celebrity stars into the iconic Vegas production.

I knew of Ian’s work of course – who could miss the mega-hit show “Beverly Hills 90210” in the 90s? With Broadway, TV and film under his belt, just about the only thing he hadn’t conquered was headlining in Las Vegas.

As legend has it, when the call came to come front the Chipps in Vegas, Ian was quick to admit that in light of taking time to care for his family – he had a two year old at home and daughter number two on the way in mere weeks – he had in fact skipped some time at the gym. More impressively, with six weeks between offer and opening night, he hit the gym hard, pulled his nutrition into line and wowed the crowd at Chippendales the night of his Vegas debut.

Then came the massive success of “Sharknado” on Syfy Network. Ian was the first to really “get”  what the movie was and how pop culture would embrace it.  I understand the sequel “Sharknado 2: The Next One” just wrapped filming in NYC and promises to be an even bigger pop phenom than the first. Credit savvy Ian to “get it” all along the way.  Plus, he really proved himself as a bonefide action movie star.

In addition, last year as I was reclaiming my own fitness getting ready to go into CHICAGO the Musical once again for the Hollywood Bowl, Ian was my “zen master” texting me daily, holding me to task and commitment. I thank Ian in great part for keeping me in line to my own weight loss and reaching my fitness goals. I got NO pass from Ian.  Every day there was another text message challenge – “Crack a deck of cards and whatever card comes up, do that many push-ups now!  Flip another card and do it again!”

Ian’s terrific – a real pro, a great family man, and a guy anyone would like to hang with.  “Steve Sanders” was a role – Ian Ziering is the man.  And trust me, he knows the difference.

I hope he has time today to spend with his family, who I know is the center of his life, and he gets to kick back and enjoy reflecting maybe just a little of his first half-century.

Congrats on entering the 50 club man. You rock. Looking forward to what’s next in your adventure.

Me with Shannen Doherty, Ian Ziering, Jennie Garth and hubby Michael Caprio

Happy birthday Vanessa Williams!

Happy, happy birthday to the fab Vanessa Williams. Like a fine wine, just keeps getting better (if that’s possible).

I’ve known Vanessa since we were freshmen music theater majors together at Syracuse University. One of my favorite things about V – among many – is that she is still who she always has been. Time may go by between seeing each other, but she’s always warm, funny and laughing every time we catch up.

Some days I might reach out to ask her something via text and she responds immediately.  Don’t you love friends that do that?

Wishing this gorgeous and talented mother of four the best birthday yet.

I’d play one of her big hits, “Save the Best for Last,” except she’s so far from “the last” that it doesn’t make sense today.

Instead, this is from one of her recent CDs “The Real Thing.” Watch and you’ll see why she is still leaving audiences “breathless.”

Happy happy V.

Happy Birthday Thommie Walsh

I originally posted this on March 15, 2011.  This is an important post for me, which I’ve now shared for the past three years.  And I plan to post it every year in dear Thommie’s memory.

I think of Thommie Walsh so often I can’t tell you. Today would have been Thommie’s 64th birthday.

Love and miss you madly, Thommie.

**********************************************************

Thommie was a 2-time Tony Award winner, an original cast member of the ground-breaking A Chorus Line, and my dear wonderful friend.

Thommie came into my life in so many ways. As a young actor and dancer, I was forever changed by his performance in A Chorus Line. The boy who grew up near Buffalo but “couldn’t remember the name of the town” – he’d blocked it out. His work on Broadway was the stuff wide-eyed young actors or dancers like me only dreamed about. He danced in several Broadway shows – including A Chorus Line – and then graduated to director/choreographer. As Tommy Tune’s partner, he won two Tony Awards: for “A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine” and “My One And Only.”

Many, many other accomplishments and awards came Thommie’s way. Too numerous to mention.

But my favorite memory of Thommie was as my friend. In 2002, Donna McKechnie was asked to perform her developing one woman show “Inside The Music” in Los Angeles. Thommie was her director and choreographer. The theater was a small theater on a budget, so Donna asked if Thommie could stay with me. Every single day was a holiday with Thommie in the house. Having consulted on some of Donna’s earlier shows, I accompanied Thommie to rehearsals and did what I could to help. But just being around Thommie made life better and funnier and more wonderful. We became very fast friends.

He was constantly supportive of my work as a director and/or choreographer. A few years later, when I was choreographing a show off-Broadway he insisted he come to see the show. Then he made a point of meeting me for dinner at Joe Allens (famous Broadway restaurant) to talk about it. I’ll never forget the look in his eyes when he sat down, smiled, and simply said to me “you did good – I loved it.”

His sense of humor, his directness in any situation, everything about Thommie worked for me. I honestly loved this man. My wonderful friend.

In late 2006, however, he stopped returning phone calls. I worried something was wrong. I reached out to everyone I could. At one point – on a cold Christmas eve – I stood outside a holiday dinner in the cold on the phone with Cynthia Onrubia who had assisted him on some shows. The news was not good. I was distraught. I practically begged this woman who barely understood who I was to keep me informed as his health deteriorated.

News was slow to come over the next several months. And then, on a hot summer night, June 16, 2007, he passed away. This boy-wonder of Broadway was gone.

I’ll never forget where I was when I heard the news. I was riding in a car in Las Vegas when a friend called me and said “did you hear about Thommie?”

I held my breath in silence as long as I could. I didn’t want to know. Perhaps if I stopped breathing it wouldn’t be true.  Several heart-beats went by. Please let it be anything that didn’t manifest in my imagination. I’m dramatic – surely I’m wrong.

I wasn’t. My friend on the other end of the call was sad and silent. But the news had come.

Gone.

But never forgotten. I remember Thommie’s birthday every year. March 15th – the Ides of March. From Julius Caesar – “beware the Ides of March.” Beware indeed. He used his own birthday onstage in A Chorus Line as “Bobby” or “Robert Charles Joseph Henry Mills, III” as his introduction went. Isn’t that funny?

I was honored to play his role in A Chorus Line several times and always thought of Thommie when I did. Near the end of his character’s monologue, he had a line that said “I just wanted to see if anyone would notice me.”

Boy – did the world notice Thommie.

I miss Thommie every time I think of him, which is often. His laugh, his humor, his talent, his friendship… all of it without boundaries.

I’d love to regale you with some stories I lived with him, but they may not be suitable for this post. If you knew him, you know what I mean. If you don’t, then please know I hope someday you know someone like him so you will.

Except there will never be another Thommie Walsh. Ever. And my eyes tear up with joy and sadness every time I know that.

Thommie – how very lucky am I to have known you. I miss you still. I always will.

Thommie once advised me if you were going to steal, steal from the best. So, to steal a phrase from Thommie – “love you madly – always.”

Happy Birthday Colin!

Colin, a young boy from Kalamazoo, who is about to turn 11 is in for a BIG surprise on his birthday.

When his mom asked him what he would like to do for his birthday, he said he didn’t want a party because “he has no friends.”

Colin was diagnosed with a disorder similar to autism about a year ago, she told WOOD TV. Because of it, he has difficulty socializing.

So what does a mother do?  THIS mother made a plan to surprise her son with more than just a “party.”  He’s about to get a huge on March 9th – his eleventh birthday.

His mother created this Facebook page asking folks to help make her son feel special on his birthday.

With a little help from Ellen, the page now has over 1.3 million “Likes”.

Here’s her message to the Facebook world:

I am Colin’s mom.

I created this page for my amazing, wonderful, challenging son who is about to turn 11 on March 9th.

Because of Colin’s disabilities, social skills are not easy for him, and he often acts out in school, and the other kids don’t like him.

So when I asked him if he wanted a party for his birthday, he said there wasn’t a point because he has no friends.

He eats lunch alone in the office everyday because no one will let him sit with them, and rather than force someone to be unhappy with his presence, he sits alone in the office.

So I thought, if I could create a page where people could send him positive thoughts and encouraging words, that would be better than any birthday party.

Please join me in making my very original son feel special on his day.

You can send Colin a birthday greeting on the special page his mom made for him – click here.

I remember what it was like to not always have someone to sit with at lunch during school.  It’s not much fun.

And my brother is mildly autistic and has always had to cope with some folks who didn’t really “get” him.  But that’s really THEM, not him.  I think he rocks.

Here’s my special birthday wish for Colin, featuring MY best friends who sit with me everyday at lunch.  I’m not much of a singer, but my friends are 🙂

Colin – my wish is that you have friends like Bruno and company to have lunch with who like you for who you are.

Happy 11th birthday, Colin!

Happy birthday Joe Manganiello!

True Blood & Magic Mike star Joe Manganiello turns 37 today.
Thanks for the inspiration, Joe!
Joe’s book “Evolution” has been a huge hit since it’s release December 3rd.  The book not only details his fitness and nutritional tips. but addresses breaking through some of our own biggest mental blocks to achieve whatever goals we set.
(Guess who got a copy for Christmas?)

NYC: Michael’s 45th birthday with the in-laws

Today is my husband’s birthday! Happy birthday Michael!

His parents came into NYC for birthday lunch, and we braved the weekend tourists to see the tree at Rockefeller Center. CROWDS! Ah, NYC at the holidays.

Birthday greeting from SURVIVOR’s Jeff Probst

I watched the season premiere of “Survivor: Blood vs Water” last night.  I never miss a season and it was an excellent premiere.  Great new twists and definitely having loved ones in the mix is going to make for new challenges in terms of scheming and alliances.

Watching reminded me I never shared a piece of my 50th birthday celebration that is tied to being a fan of “Survivor” since it began.  And it’s pretty fab.

Back in July, I celebrated my 50th birthday with a surprise bowling party and a small group of longtime friends. (p.s. PERFECT birthday party!)

My husband somehow arranged for this 50th birthday greeting from the fab Jeff Probst of the hit TV show “Survivor.”

And on top of it all, he’s ON LOCATION with “Survivor” when he taped the greeting.

This was just one of many amazing greetings Michael collected from people who participated in my first 50 years. It was a great birthday gift 🙂

Happy 55th Birthday, Madonna!

Over her three-decade-long career (first album released in 1983), Madonna has sold more than 300 million records worldwide, amassed a collection of No. 1 singles, and reinvented herself many times over.

Pretty hard to believe Madge is 55. Not only because she looks fantastic, but the original Material Girl shows no signs of slowing down. Her “MDNA” tour last year was the highest-grossing tour of 2012.

Madonna thanked her fans on her Instagram page with this statement:

“Thank u all for your #birthday love! Help me celebrate my birthday, by donating to Raising Malawi to support the work of one of my Heroes, Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Eric Borgstein: http://bit.ly/mbdayborg. Revolution of LOVE!”

What would a Madonna birthday be without celebrating some of her best music videos?

Happy birthday, Madge. You’re still fab. The world sits waiting to see what’s next.
