Via press release, Ben Cohen shares that his foundation to fight bullying – The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation – has proved $200,000 in support to anti-bullying programs.
The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation today announced nearly $200,000 in support provided to anti-bullying efforts since launching less than two years ago, in April 2011. Of the $198,900 in support, $58,200 was given in direct grants to 18 anti-bullying groups across the US, UK and Ireland. Another $140,700 went to support StandUp’s international anti-bullying awareness and education campaign.
“Our mission is simple but will take time to fulfill. We are off to a strong start,” said Ben Cohen, MBE, chairman. “We exist to raise awareness of the long-term damaging effects of bullying, and to fund those doing real-world work to stop it.”
Ben Cohen, a rugby World Cup champion, is the first sports superstar to dedicate his philanthropic efforts to anti-bullying. He founded the Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation in memory of his father, Peter Cohen, who was beaten to death when he stood up for an employee who was being attacked.

Happy birthday to the amazing (and handsome) LGBT ally, Ben Cohen, who works tirelessly to help prevent bullying with his StandUp Foundation.
From the StandUp Foundation website:
The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, Inc. is the world’s first foundation dedicated to raising awareness of the long-term, damaging effects of bullying, and funding those doing real-world work to stop it. We stand up against bullying regardless of to whom it happens. Because lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are often targeted by bullies, we give particular attention to this community. We include removing homophobia from sports as central to our mission.
The foundation is funded, in part, through profits generated by the StandUp social-commerce brand. Individuals and corporations contribute generously to the Foundation as well. To engage the consumer marketplace and help drive social change as a partner, please begin by learning more about the StandUp brand.
Ben Cohen, MBE, is an England Rugby World Cup champion, and among the world’s greatest athletes. He ranks second in all-time scoring for England, and first among straight professional athletes to focus his philanthropic efforts for the benefit of the LGBT community.
Ben’s new 2013 Calendar is available and the proceeds go to help the StandUp Foundation’s work on behalf of LGBT teens.

In July 2012, the former rugby superstar told U.K.’s Gay Times that he choose to support the gay community after he retired because he was “in a privileged position.”
“I had a great following in the gay community so I started breaking down those stereotypes when I was still playing rugby. And it got to a point where I decided I wanted to do something more, which is when we set up the foundation. But I didn’t realize how powerful retiring for a cause would be.”
Every sale of StandUp branded merchandise benefits the anti-bullying work of the Foundation.
