Rick Santorum chosen by anti-gay groups as preferred candidate

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins announced on a conference call that social conservatives had officially settled on Rick Santorum as their preferred candidate for the Republican nomination.

The decision was made today after three rounds of balloting at a meeting of more than 150 social conservative leaders and political activists held over the last two days in Brenham, Texas.

Though the meeting was widely seen as an effort to settle on a candidate to stop Mitt Romney, Romney’s own campaign sent a representative to make an appeal to the group and Perkins said it was “not a bash Romney weekend” and “not a lot of time” was spent discussing him.

Jon Huntsman’s campaign was the only campaign not to participate in the meeting.

High School football coach resigns over handing out survey asking if players were “queer” or “a little bitch”

Pat Lynch, the football coach of Buffalo High School in Wyoming resigned this week after it was revealed he had handed out an offensive “Hurt Feelings Report” to players which included boxes for them to check with attributes like “I am a pussy”, “I am a queer”, “I am a little bitch”, and “My butt is easily hurt”.

Said Lynch in a resignation letter to the school board, according to the Buffalo Bulletin:  “I would like to apologize for my lack of judgment and the poor choice that I made from my position as head football coach for Buffalo High School. I know that this situation has caused you pain and discomfort, and for that I am truly sorry. As a person and a professional, I believe I will learn and grow from this experience and use it to help others. I appreciate having had the opportunity to coach in this community for the past 22 years. It has been a rewarding experience. I am eager to earn back your trust as I continue to serve in a profession that I truly love.”

Lynch is being allowed to remain on at the school as a guidance counselor, the Casper Tribune reports.

SRSLY? Guidance counselor?

National Organization for Marriage supports Michigan law legalizing anti-gay bullying

“Are some major political players openly now asserting that protecting gay children from bullying—a worthy goal—requires giving the government the right to prohibit thoughtful and civil expressions of religious or moral viewpoints?  What would become of our democracy if we accepted this reckless premise?”

“I hope Michigan’s effort to civilize children by repressing bullying becomes a landmark of a new effort to genuinely address the legitimate concerns of parents—including parents with gay teens—without heavy-handed use of government power to repress and exclude Christian views on sex and marriage.”

NOM president Brian Brown, applauding the Michigan state Senate for approving a bill which allows bullying which has a “religious or moral” purpose.

Chick-Fil-A’s $2 million donation to anti-gay groups in 2009

After Jeremy Hooper first discovered the fast food chain Chick-fil-A’s ties to anti-gay organizations, an Equality Matters investigation revealed that it had given $1.1 million to anti-gay groups between 2003 and 2008.

According to their 2009 tax returns, the company gave almost twice that, nearly $2 million, in 2009 alone.

Among the largest recipients was the Marriage and Family Legacy Fund, which Chick-fil-A’s senior vice president, Donald “Bubba” Cathy, helped to launch. Other recipients included Focus on the Family, Exodus International’s ex-gay ministries, and the Family Research Council.

Mind you, throughout these donations Chick-Fil-A denies any anti-gay sentiment.

Desean Jackson, Eagles wideout, uses gay slur on radio

During an appearance on an XM radio show, a caller asked whether Eagles wideout, Desean Jackson, if he had ever “got his dick knocked in the dirt.”  Jackson replied, “What kind of question is that?” and then called Troy from Tennessee a “gay ass faggot.”

The host of the XM satellite radio show – Rude Jude – told later said that Jackson shouldn’t apologize because he “is a hood dude,” and for “hood cats, the worst thing you can call someone is a bitch or a faggot. I don’t think he’s homophobic. He’s joking.”

On Saturday, Jackson issued this statement:

“In a recent radio interview a caller got really confrontational with me,” Jackson said through a spokesperson. “I got very heated with the caller, took it a bit too far and did not mean to offend anybody. I meant no disrespect and a better choice of words was needed.”

Jackson’s comments come only days after former Giants’ hero David Tyree said that he believed legalizing gay marriage in New York would be the first step towards society devolving into anarchy.

Basketball stars Kobe Bryant and Joakim Noah were ordered by the NBA to pay fines after using gay slurs to attack a referee and a fan earlier this year.

Safeway fires employee for calling customers ‘faggots’

Safeway has terminated the employee who called a gay couple “faggots” as they waited to make purchases at the grocery chain’s 1100 4th St. SW store on Saturday, June 11.

In a statement issued to Metro Weekly Thursday evening, June 16, Craig Muckle, manager of public affairs and public relations at Safeway’s Eastern Division said the incident, involving a cashier named Deangelah, Jason Morgan and his partner Brendan Harrington, was “personally offensive” to him.

“This goes against everything we believe and practice in terms of serving and welcoming our customers, and in being a part of the diverse communities we are privileged to serve,” his statement reads.

“We are at a loss to explain how one of our employees, even one who has been on the job for less than a month, could consider this kind of behavior to be acceptable. The employee has been terminated.”

More audience members speak about Tracy Morgan rant

It’s hard to imagine sitting in the audience while comedian Tracy Morgan unloaded a string of antigay comments from stage. But Cynthia Wagner and Katie Cleek don’t have to imagine. They were there. And the couple can’t stop reliving those tense moments. Part of them feels relieved to have made it out of the auditorium safely.

Without video of the tirade, it’s all the more difficult to understand what it must have been like to be a lesbian couple, cuddled closely in the pew-style seating of the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, caught with Wagner’s arm around Cleek when Morgan suddenly said over the microphone that there’s no such thing as women loving women. Witnesses say Morgan claimed all lesbians have “daddy issues” and just hate men.

“I wanted so badly to get up and leave but then the fear had me locked in those seats,” Wagner said. “There was no joke. Everyone was waiting with baited breath for the punch line.”

They waited as Morgan said gays should “quit being pussies” when it comes to bullying. They waited through him saying he would stab his son to death if he were gay. They waited for the punch line that should drain the tension out of the moment. But it never came, they say. Instead, much of the audience reacted with hoots and cheers to what sounded to the couple like a speech – a hate speech.

“People were more vocal upstairs but they were not around us,” Wagner said of the crowd’s reaction. “There was a kind of silence in our area because I think they knew.”

The worst part was feeling like the only two gay people, suddenly caught at an event where they weren’t welcome. It must have been like turning down an alley that you realize too late might be dangerous.

When the show was over, “we waited until almost everybody left,” Cleek said. And then they darted to the car. “We didn’t even hold hands as we walked out, and normally we do. We didn’t know what to expect at that point. Is someone going to say or do something to us now? And I’ve never felt like that – ever.”

Michele Bachmann supports anti-gay amendments

I notice in Ms. Bachmann’s impassioned speech about “protecting marriage” she doesn’t address outlawing divorce, which would have a MUCH bigger impact in keeping the parents of children together. Hmm…

As I read someone today, this footage will be used in history classes in less than 10 years as an example alongside slavery, Women’s suffrage, the McCarthy hearings, and the civil rights movement of the ’60s.

How does amending the Minnesota state constitution to outlaw marriage equality protect anyone’s marriage?

Minnesota may place a referendum on the ballot that would write prejudice and bigotry into the state constitution of Minnesota.

Watch the video and ask yourself: how does outlawing marriage equality protect your marriage? How does it ‘protect’ anyone’s marriage?
