Brickstone takes on the Westboro Baptist Church

Brickstone catches up to the Westboro Baptist Church in Malibu (nice place for a picket!) and asks the members of the anti-gay group questions many of us have wondered:

“Have you ever wondered how good gay sex must be if they’re willing to go to hell for it?”

“Can a person go to heaven if he has homosexual urges but refuses to act on them, and he’s so upset about the openly gay people that he makes his whole family have signs that say ‘God hates fags’?

“Would you glass bottom boat Pat Robertson?”

“Didn’t I jerk you off in a Kmart bathroom once?”

“Why did the Newtown kids go to hell but not aborted fetuses?”

“Didn’t the hot members of your church leave because their brothers were kind of screwing with them?”

I didn’t find the answers terribly revealing, but it was fun to watch.

Assholes.

This is how DOMA impacts gay and lesbian service members

Marine Corps. Captain Matthew Phelps made history when he became the first gay man to ask his partner, Ben Schock, to marry him at the White House.

The Center for American Progress and OutServe/SLDN profile the soon-to-be-married couple in a video highlighting the financial struggles they’ll incur because of DOMA:

As long as DOMA remains in effect and the cost of his moving is taken into consideration, Capt. Phelps may expect to receive about $20,000 less in benefits and allowances than the other married servicemen that he serves beside.

Indiana: Diana “Gays Have No Purpose” Medley suspended by school district

Diana Medley, Indiana special ed teacher who made the statement that gays “have no purpose in life,” has been suspended by her school district.

Superintendent Mark Baker of the Northeast School Corp. in western Indiana’s Sullivan County issued a statement Wednesday saying the teacher has been placed on administrative leave and that state and local police are stationing officers at North Central Junior-Senior High School as a precaution because of “aggressive” email messages sent to the school and the teacher.

In statements to a local television station recently, Medley said that gays had no purpose in life, the idea of LGBT teens attending a prom was “offensive,” and equated LGBT teens to students with developmental disabilities.

Medley also said that she believes homosexuality is a choice, and that no one is born gay.

Indiana: Public school teacher supports holding separate prom to exclude gay students

Indiana public school teacher Diane Medley, speaking in support of a plan to stage a separate senior prom that will ban gay students from attending:

“I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal. Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don’t agree with them, but I care about them. It’s the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason. So the same goes for gays? Do you think they have a purpose in life?’ No I honestly don’t. Sorry, but I don’t. I don’t understand it. A gay person isn’t going to come up and make some change unless it’s to realize that it was a choice and they’re choosing God.”

Dan Savage reacts:

Let’s pause here to grieve for all the special education students in Sullivan, Indiana. Students with learning disabilities have it hard enough without getting stuck with a mentally challenged special ed teacher. You know else has it hard enough? I imagine queer kids growing up in Sullivan, Indiana, population 4,249, have it hard enough without having to watch shit like this on the evening news.

The anti-gay haters at Sullivan High have a Facebook page: 2013 Sullivan Traditional Prom. One of the organizers of this hate group would like us to know that “this is not a hate group.” 2013 Sullivan Traditional Prom is just a group that has been organized with the sole purpose of creating an alternate prom that excludes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students and to achieve that end the group’s members are calling LGBT kids “offensive,” sick, and sinful.

What’s hateful about that? Besides, you know, everything?

I completely agree with Dan. Their last high school celebration these folks have and they want to plan as an exclusionary event. That how you want to head out into the world? Really?

Ohio mayor resigns after stating she didn’t like “queers” on village police force

Mary McAngus being sworn in as Mayor

The mayor of Pomeroy, Ohio, has resigned after questioning whether there were “queers” on the village police force.

The Columbus Dispatch reports:

[Police Chief] Proffitt last month submitted to the village council an information packet that included his six-page sworn statement. He warned the council that the mayor’s behavior could get the village of 2,000 residents sued.

Proffitt wrote that McAngus called him into her office about two weeks after Calendine was hired. She said she heard “that Kyle was a queer” and asked what the chief was going to do about it. Nothing, he replied, because that would be discrimination.

“She stated ‘I don’t like a Queer working for the Village, I might be old-fashioned, but I don’t like it.’  ” Proffitt wrote in the statement.

The mayor persisted in making crude comments about the officer and his partner to police department employees, Proffitt said. She asked a newly hired officer if he knew that Calendine was gay and whether that bothered him. When the officer said no, she asked him if he, too, was gay, and smiled and stared at him until the uncomfortable officer said he had to get back to work, Proffitt said.

Two gay Boy Scouts, who are brothers, discuss how they feel about BSA ban on gay scouts

From the BBC comes this profile of Lucien and Pascal Tessier of Kensington, Maryland – two gay brothers who are also Boy Scouts.

Older brother and Eagle Scout Lucien says in the interview: “I think that by proposing this sort of policy where local troops decide for themselves whether to admit gay scouts or not, they’re not living up to their responsibility to accept everyone.”

Poll: 55% of Americans support allowing gays in Boy Scouts

In a Quinnipiac University national poll released today, Americans support allowing gay Boy Scouts by a margin of 55%- 33%.

There is a large gender gap as women support gay scouts 61 – 27 percent, compared to 49 – 39 percent among men, the independent poll finds.

White Catholics support gay scouts 63 – 25 percent. Among white Protestants, 44 percent say open up scouting and 41 percent say no. White evangelical Protestants oppose gay scouts 56 – 33 percent.

“Now that the Armed Forces ban on openly gay service members has been lifted, and polls show increasing acceptance of same-sex marriage, most American voters think it’s time to open up the Boy Scouts too,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

NFL’s Brendon Ayanbadejo & Chris Kluwe respond to Chris Culliver’s anti-gay remarks

Baltimore Raven Brendon Ayanbadejo’s reaction to Chris Culliver’s anti-gay remarks:

“You know, I think that in San Francisco, and being from the Bay Area myself, that’s something that we really try to preach — love and acceptance of everybody. And so I couldn’t really even say anything negative to the young man. It’s just one of those things where you have to live and you have to learn. And I said earlier on (a TV broadcast) — in the words of Martin Luther King, you can’t fight hate with hate. You have to fight hate with love. We’ve all made our mistakes, we’ve all been there and done certain things, and we’ve hurt people regardless if we meant to do it or not. But more than anything it’s an opportunity to have a learning experience.”

And the Minnesota Vikings Chris Kluwe had this to say:

“While he’s certainly entitled to speak his mind, Culliver is a role model whether he likes it or not. There are kids all over the United States who aspire to be right where he is and he has an obligation to consider the effect of his words. Kids are listening.”
