Brian Brown is already a sore loser over marriage equality

“I think we’re going to win these cases. But say the worst happens and we lose in a broad way – that means that the Court somehow does a Roe, a Roe v. Wade, on marriage and says that all these state constitutional amendments are overturned, gay marriage is now a constitutional right – well, we’re going to press forward on a Federal Marriage Amendment. We’ve always supported a Federal Marriage Amendment, and there’s a lot of misconceptions about it. Some people try and argue, ‘Well, this is against federalism.’ No, our founders gave us a system where we can amend the Constitution.

“We shouldn’t have to do this, we shouldn’t have to worry about activist judges, you know, making up out of thin air a constitutional right that obviously none of our founders found there and no one found there until quite recently. But if we do, for us, the Federal Marriage Amendment is a way that people can stand up and say, ‘Enough is enough.’ We need a solution in this country, we cannot be, as Lincoln said, half slave, half free. We can’t have a country on key moral questions where we’re just, where we don’t have a solution. And if the Court forces a solution, the way we’ll amend that is through  the Federal Marriage Amendment.” – Hate group leader Brian Brown via Right Wing Watch

Since 1789, there have been over 11,000 attempts to amend the US Constitution.  While these may be approached by “national convention,” none of those attempts have succeeded.

Only 27 amendments have been added to the Constitution.  The first ten are known as the Bill of Rights. The last amendment was added in 1992.

There are two steps to passing an amendment: Proposal and Ratification.

The amendment must first be proposed a 2/3 vote of Congress.

Ratification occurs with a 3/4 vote of the state legislatures or a 3/4 vote of state conventions made up of delegates (not necessarily legislators) elected by the people. That would mean 38 states would have to ratify the amendment.

Not gonna happen with marriage equality, Brian…

Kentucky: Gov. Beshear vetoes anti-discrimination act

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear vetoed the so-called Religious Freedom Act, which would basically allow just about any discrimination against LGBT people (or anybody else) on the basis of “sincerely held religious beliefs.”

Gov. Beshear has posted a statement on his official website:

“I have significant concerns that this bill will cause serious unintentional consequences that could threaten public safety, health care, and individuals’ civil rights. As written, the bill will undoubtedly lead to costly litigation. I have heard from many organizations and government entities that share those same concerns. Therefore, after giving this measure thoughtful analysis and consideration, today I vetoed the bill.”

The governor’s site lists numerous ways in which the bill would negatively affect the citizens of Kentucky, not the least of which would be “weakening of local civil rights laws.”

Look for the GOP legislators to attempt an override of the veto.

The Lee Boys drop out of NOM event in Washington DC upon learning anti-gay agenda

The Lee Boys, one of two musical acts scheduled to perform at NOM’s upcoming March for Marriage in Washington D.C. around the time of the Supreme Court hearings, has dropped out after discovering the agenda of the event.

From Good As You:

I informed the team of what they may not know about the NOM agenda, why this booking is sure to garner a lot of unfavorable attention, and how they might be able to make a better choice.

I’m happy to now report that “better choice.”

A band member has confirmed for me that the group is PULLING OUT OF THE GIG. They were not aware of what NOM was all about and they want no part.

The only statement this band member wanted to give beyond simple confirmation is to say that “music is about love” and the band “would never want to offend.”

Bill Gates: Boy Scouts should drop gay scout ban

In an ABC News interview, Bill Gates was asked about what he learned in scouting. He was also asked if the scouts should allow openly gay members,

Q: Should the Boy Scouts of America rescind it’s ban on gay members and leaders?

Bill Gates: Absolutely

Q: Why?

Bill Gates: It’s 2013

And there you have it…

Anti-gay speakers gather tens of listeners at CPAC

Via Chris Geidner’s Instagram comes this photo of the CPAC panel featuring National Organization for Marriage’s Brian Brown,  anti-gay activist Cleta Mitchell, and Breitbart editor Ben Shapiro.

I know, I know. It’s hard to see them over all the EMPTY chairs….

Sad, isn’t it?

(Actually – it’s not.  It’s quite rapturous that no one is interested in their hate-mongering).

NYC: Gay man confronts “slick hair” homophobe

New York City actor and comedian Michael Hartney writes on his blog:

This afternoon, my partner Turtle walked out of our apartment to grab a bite. Before he even left our block, a man called him “faggot” as he passed. Rather than let the guy get away with it, Turtle decided to confront this man about his hateful behavior. And he filmed it.

Notice how well Turtle handles himself in this video. No need to fight hate with hate; calling him “slick hair” is as hateful as Turtle gets (which is hilarious and awesome). He lets that ignorant clown have it with poise and decency. Not surprising, considering Turtle is the absolute best guy around and I couldn’t be prouder of him.

Our neighbors saw this altercation, and told Turtle that this man has been harassing their thirteen year-old son for years, sometimes even calling him “faggot” while the kid was in recess at school with his peers. They know who he is and where he lives. They’ve been too scared for the kid’s safety to do anything about it. But it’s going to end today.

Let’s hear it for Turtle!

Clearly the bigot had no idea a “faggot” would stand up for himself. I’ll be curious to see if the man’s identity becomes public as this story has gone viral today.

I personally think it would be grand if everyone in the neighborhood pointed and called Mr. Slick Hair “faggot” every time he walks down the street.

The couple plans to file a complaint today.

Quebec launches 5 year anti-homophobia campaign

From GlobalNews: A public display of affection between a couple shouldn’t usually elicit a reaction from people.

But what if those engaging in that passionate smooch are a same-sex couple?

The Quebec government has launched a unique advertising campaign designed to get the province thinking about just how open-minded it really is when it comes to homosexuality.

The TV, radio and web campaign shows routine, everyday scenes in which the viewer has no idea until the end that the ad is about sexual orientation.

The ads were developed by Cossette Communications in Quebec City over the past year. They’re part of a $7.1 million, five-year anti-homophobia campaign by the provincial government.

Bryan Fischer’s daily dose of fear mongering featuring Queen Elizabeth II

If you ever needed a good example of “gay fear mongering” from folks like Bryan Fischer, this is it.

The above was tweeted by the notorious Mr. Fischer in reference to Queen Elizabeth II’s plans to sign a document in public tomorrow called the “21st Century Commonwealth Magna Carta,”

One particular line in this document is making headlines around the world because people have interpreted it as the first time Queen Elizabeth will openly support gay rights in her 61-year reign.  While the document alludes to LGBT discrimination, it doesn’t actually mention gays or lesbians.

Via the Daily Mail:

The charter, dubbed a ‘21st Century Commonwealth Magna Carta’ declares: ‘We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, colour, creed, political belief or other grounds.’ The ‘other grounds’ is intended to refer to sexuality – but specific reference to ‘gays and lesbians’ was omitted in deference to Commonwealth countries with draconian anti-gay laws. Sources close to the Royal Household said she is aware of the implications of the charter’s implicit support of gay rights and commitment to gender equality.

While I applaud the Queen for a welcome step forward, let’s go back to Mr. Fischer’s tweet.

“Active and aggressive discrimination against Christians…”  Now does “whether rooted in gender, race, color, creed, political belief or other grounds” sound like “active and aggressive” Christian discrimination?

And btw – homosexuality remains illegal in 41 of the 54 Commonwealth nations.

This is how these clowns operate.  Waving red flags and stirring a pot that isn’t even on simmer.

Sad, Mr. Fisher, sad…

Carly Rae Jepsen drops out of Boy Scout Jamboree over anti-gay discrimination

Hooray for the good guys!

Carly Rae Jepsen tweeted today that she does NOT plan to take part in the Boy Scouts of America’s Jamboree this summer due to anti-gay practices.

She went on to tweet: “I always have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level and and stay informed on the ever changing landscape in the ongoing battle for gay rights in this country and across the globe.”

Early today I posted that rock band TRAIN has made the same decision about the Boy Scouts and their anti-gay discrimination.

Yes – the Boy Scouts get to have their own position.  But it doesn’t mean artists and the public have to support it.

Yay Carly Rae!
