Bryan Fischer could not “choose” to have sex with a man

Bryan Fischer, of the anti-gay hate group American Family Association, has long shared that he does not believe gays and lesbians are born gay. That their sexual behavior is by choice. That they can CHOOSE to have same-sex relations.

But when caller to his radio show asked if Fischer could have sex with a man (it’s a “choice” you know…) Fischer was a little dumbfounded because he simply couldn’t “choose” to do the “deed” with a man:

Caller: Could you have sex with a man?

Fischer: I’m sorry?

Caller: Could you have sex with a man?

Fischer: Would I?

Caller: Could you?

Fischer: No.

Caller: I thought it was a choice?

Fischer: Sure it is, I’m just saying it’s emotionally, morally, mentally impossible for me—

Caller: But you just told me that you couldn’t do it?

Fischer: Yeah, I couldn’t do it, there was no way; there is nothing in me that would let me do that.

Caller: OK. How do you think I feel about women?

Fischer: I don’t know. How do you feel about women?

Caller: There ain’t no way.

So when gays and lesbians don’t choose to have sex with someone of the opposite sex, it’s their own choice and a sin. When Bryan Fischer can’t choose to have sex with a man, it’s just impossible.

But remember – Fischer says it’s all a choice…

Omaha: Straight man beaten standing up for his gay friends

Ryan Langenegger left bloody after standing up for his gay friends

Ryan Langenegger, a straight man in Omaha, was punched, beaten and left with a bloody gash and chipped teeth for standing up for his gay friends.

KMTV has the story:

Out with two of his gay friends in the Old Market Saturday night, they decided to grab a bite at PepperJax Bar and Grill.

Inside a group of three guys started to verbally harass his friends. Ryan said, to avoid confrontation they left PepperJax.

The three men followed them outside.

“My friend then said, yes, I know I’m a boy in a dress. After that he said, “yes I know”, some “colorful words” and disgusting. I said hey guys, we’re not looking for any trouble, just trying to get home. Just trying to get home”, said Langenegger.

Ryan stepped forward and tried to stop the incident. Instead he took a hard blow to the face.

“It’s sad, it’s really sad, disgusting. It just makes no sense this day and age and in Omaha, for all of this stuff to still be happening and out in the streets.”

A police report was filed but the attackers were long gone by the time police arrived at the scene of the attack.  However, surveillance video and credit card records may end up identifying them.

Kansas: Waiter stiffed by Christians for being “queer”

From Raw Story: A group of customers refused to tip their 20-year-old server at a Carraba’s Italian restaurant in Overland Park, KS on the grounds that his homosexuality is “an affront to God.” According to KCTV Fox 19, the server went to the table after the group of customers left and found a note explaining their decision.

“Thank you for your service, it was excellent. That being said, we cannot in good conscience tip you, for your homosexual lifestyle is an affront to GOD. Queers do not share in the wealth of GOD, and you will not share in ours,” said the note. “We hope you will see the tip your queer choices made you lose out on, and plan accordingly. It is never too late for GOD’s love, but none shall be spared for queers. May GOD have mercy on you.”

Friends and supportive customers plan to dine at the restaurant Friday evening as a show of support for the waiter who received the hateful note. He has declined to give his name or go on camera and has asked people not to try and give him money.

Thomas Roberts talks to the Advocate about hosting the Miss Universe pageant in Russia

Thomas Roberts sat down with the Advocate to talk about his recently announced assignment to head to Russia to host the Miss Universe Pageant.

Some folks have been critical of Roberts taking on the task, saying he should instead boycott the event in solidarity with our Russian LGBT community now under siege by anti-gay laws being passed.

In response to the criticism, Robert wrote a thoughtful op-ed piece for MSNBC, and is now discussing why he made the decision to not boycott and host the pageant so that Russia and the world could see a successful, gainfully employed, confident gay man on the world stage.

Here’s just a bit of his exchange with Advocate:

What was the response of Russian LGBT activists that you reached out to?

I was told: don’t boycott. I was told that this is too big of an opportunity, and that voices like theirs need representation. So, what they want is, while they don’t feel safe, they want influential people to come in, and speak out. Not only can I speak out ahead of time, before going, but I also have a great capacity to cover and storytell. So, that’s why this assignment was so attractive to me.

In doing that research, did you consult with any other LGBT anchors, like Rachel Maddow, at MSNBC, about this decision?
No, I didn’t. I consulted with the HRC, and with GLAAD. I wanted to find out their take on what they thought about this decision by me. They are two organizations that I have done a great deal of work with, and that have not only had my personal support, but professional support. So, a lot of counsel, a lot of advice, went into this. Certainly great LGBT activists, who are mentors of mine — I reached out to them as well. So, I am a little dismayed at some of the reaction that people have had, that have wanted to try to attack my personal and professional belief for what I’m standing up for, but I respect their right to do that. But, I wish they would have a little more faith in me.
Given that there has been some vocal critique, how do you respond to critics who say you are going there primarily because — I presume you’re being paid to host it — you’re going there to line your pockets?
Well that’s just silly. I mean, I show up to work every day, and we still work in a country where there are gay and lesbian people who can be fired every day at work. In 33 states, you can be fired based on gender identity, 29 states they explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation; we have the Employment Non-Discrimination Act languishing in Washington, D.C., and has for decades.
So that’s silly, that would be like telling all of these bloggers and reporters, and everyone else, don’t show up to work in the United States. And nobody boycotted, last year, when Miss Universe was held in Las Vegas, and we hadn’t had decisions on marriage equality by that point. And I think that we had just gotten out from “don’t ask, don’t tell,” but nobody was asking for a boycott of that, so it’s interesting to me. I find it very interesting, that people would take this tone with me.

Rachel Maddow on the day NOM lost big in New Jersey

Rachel Maddow chats on NOM and Brian Brown, highlighting the TOTALLY TERRIBLE day they had yesterday in New Jersey as gay couples began marrying and Governor Chris Christie decided to abandon his battle against same-sex marriage.

Plus, Rachel discusses Brian Brown’s admission that he travels to Russia to campaign against LGBT rights.

Jeff Cook-McCormac, senior advisor to American Unity Fund, talks with Rachel Maddow about the challenges of advocating for gay rights in Republican politics.

South Carolina mayor – I don’t want “queers” ramming marriage equality down my throat

West Union Mayor Linda Oliver doesn't want marriage equality rammed down her throat
West Union Mayor Linda Oliver

From Huffington Post: A South Carolina mayor has sparked the ire of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community after expressing her opposition to same-sex marriage in a Facebook status referencing “queers.”

As Fox Carolina is reporting, West Union Mayor Linda Oliver took to Facebook in response to a North Carolina county official’s decision to defy his state’s ban on same-sex marriage by accepting marriage applications from LGBT couples.

While the mayor’s controversial post has since been deleted, Towleroad quotes Oliver as having originally written:

What’s it gonna take to get these queers to realize they don’t need a piece of paper. God will not bless their union because he plainly speaks against queers in the Bible. Want to cover your queer with insurance? Buy a policy. Want your queer to get your stuff when you die? Make a will.

The post quickly drew an onslaught of criticism from Facebook users. Meanwhile, a Facebook group titled “Recall West Union S.C. Mayor Linda Oliver” was also created in the wake of the controversy.

But Oliver says she anticipated the heated response, speaking to Fox Carolina, she compared herself to Jesus Christ saying “All I can say is if people want to crucify me, that’s fine. I know that following Jesus, I’m going to be crucified.”

On the topic of same-sex marriage, she added, “I don’t want it rammed down my throat.”

Gov. Chris Christie gets unfriended by Brian Brown of NOM over marriage equality

NOM’s Brian Brown is TOTALLY sad that same-sex couples have equal rights in New Jersey regarding marriage.

From the NOM Blog:

“There’s no question that the courts of New Jersey are responsible for the imposition of same-sex marriage in that state, and we sharply criticize them for redefining our most important social institution with no regard to the wishes of voters or even elected officials,” said Brian Brown, NOM’s president. “The refusal of the New Jersey Supreme Court to order a stay of the same-sex ‘marriage’ ruling was wrong, and the latest example of an activist judiciary running amok, substituting their views for those of the people of the state.

Still, we are extremely disappointed in Governor Chris Christie for withdrawing the state’s appeal of the underlying decision, effectively throwing in the towel on marriage. The mark of a leader is to walk a principled walk no matter the difficulty of the path. Chris Christie has failed the test, abandoning both voters and the core institution of society – marriage as the union of one man and one woman.”

A superior court judge had imposed same-sex marriage in New Jersey in a ruling in September, with same-sex ‘marriages’ set to begin today. Christie’s administration appealed the decision and sought a stay to preserve the status-quo until the merits of the case is heard next year. The New Jersey Supreme Court denied the request for the stay, and today Christie dropped his appeal of the underlying decision imposing same-sex marriage.

“It’s a sad day for the voters of New Jersey,” said Brown. “An activist judiciary has once again imposed its views and ignored the rights of voters. We will continue to fight for the right of New Jersey voters to determine the definition of marriage. Regrettably, Governor Christie’s decision to surrender on marriage reveals him to be a man who lacks the courage of his supposed convictions. As far as we are concerned, it’s a disqualifying failure. His surrender on marriage effectively surrenders any chance he might have had to secure the GOP nomination for president.”

Straight, white male walks a mile in the shoes of a gay man

This weekend while traveling, One Sleepy Dad blogger Aaron saw his suitcase emerge on the Perth airport carousel with the message “I Am Gay.”

Aaron is not gay. But the reaction he felt as he carried his suitcase through the airport opened his eyes to just a small part of what it’s like to be treated like a minority.

His articulation of the experience has gone viral on the internet today:

I am a white heterosexual male. This trifecta of privilege means that I’m not routinely subjected to prejudice. But for a few minutes I got to walk in the shoes of a gay person in a public place. For no good reason I had had a slur marked over my luggage. I was degraded. I was shamed. I was humiliated.

For me, this was only a few minutes of one day of my life. If what I felt for those few minutes is extrapolated out every day over a lifetime, then I can fully understand why our gay friends feel persecuted and why they have such high rates of suicide. It is unacceptable.

It is said that words can’t hurt you. That it is true. But it isn’t the words that hurt, it’s the intention behind them. “I am gay” was not emblazened across my luggage as a celebration. It was used as a pejorative. It was used to humiliate. It was used as a slur.

[snip]

Until our political/religious/community leaders acknowledge and address these inequalities, until we de-normalise prejudice, we can’t expect the “losers” to follow.

As for the people calling me a whiner and telling me to toughen up, I would like to quote Lieutenant General David Morrison: The standard you walk past is the standard you accept.

This incident isn’t about me, it’s about what we as a society find acceptable.

In addition to the blog post and the author tweeting the picture of his suitcase, any major outlets have also published the photo, including The Huffington Post, The Sydney Morning Herald, and International Business Times.

The airline has since apologized.  “We are taking this matter very seriously and we have contacted the passenger to apologise for any distress caused,” a Jetstar spokeswoman said in response to the media storm.

Nova Scotia: Gay man stabbed, left paralyzed in street attack

Terrible news out of Canada this weekend as a gay man was violently attacked in the street early Saturday morning.

Choir director Scott Jones’ throat was slashed and he was stabbed in the back, the knife severing his spine, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Police made an arrest in the attack late last night.

The CBC reports:

Police said Shane Edward Matheson, 19, of Trenton, N.S. is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace, in the violent attack on 27-year-old Scott Jones early Saturday morning. The accused was arrested without incident at a home on High Street in Trenton at 11 p.m. AT on Saturday.

Matheson is facing another charge of assault with a weapon for an incident earlier in the evening against an 18-year-old woman. New Glasgow police Const. Ken Macdonald said that charge is unrelated to the attack on Jones, which happened shortly before 2:30 a.m. local time on Saturday.

Jones’ friend and roommate Amy Punke said she and Jones were out with friends celebrating the opening of a friend’s art studio. Though she didn’t witness the attack, Punke has been speaking to Jones, who remains in critical but stable condition in a Halifax hospital.

Russian lawmaker proposes banning surrogacy for gays

Russian lawmaker Vitaly Milonov

This guy is a piece of work.

Anti-gay Russian lawmaker Vitaly Milonov (pictured), who co-sponsored the “non-traditional relationships” propaganda bill, has recommended an amendment banning same-sex couples from having biological children through surrogacy:

“At present, Russian law has a loophole through which members of sexual minorities are allowed to inform children about homosexuality,” his office said earlier this week. “By and large, thanks to surrogacy, homosexuals have the ability to inform a child about their lifestyle, values, and views on gender roles and relations.”

He continued: “It is necessary to amend the Russian law banning the promotion of homosexuality and pedophilia among minors, officially registering a ban on the use of surrogacy for gay men and people with blurred sexual preferences.”

Additionally, Milonov supports proposed legislation which would deny custody to people “guilty” of being gay on the same grounds as alcoholism, drug use, a history of violence, insanity, and child abuse.

But remember, President Putin would have you know that gays and lesbians are TOTALLY NOT the target of discrimination in Russia.
