Pat Robertson Calls Gay Advocates Are ‘Terrorists, Radicals And Extremists’

Transcript from today’s anti-gay rant by Pat Robertson:

It’s one thing to want to persuade somebody to believe like you do, that’s what Christianity is about, to bring the Gospel message and say this is good news and we’d like you to accept it. It’s something else to take the arm of the government to force somebody to do something that is against, contrary to their religion, and that’s what these homosexuals are trying to do. They are trying to force people who are Christians to marry them or else face jail, to make cakes honoring them or else go to jail and give their sermons over and divulge their innermost thoughts or go to jail, that’s the kind of thing we’re dealing with.

These people are terrorists, they’re radicals and they’re extremists. No Christian in his right mind would ever try to enforce somebody against their belief or else suffer jail. They did that during the Inquisition, it was horrible, it was a black mark on our history, but it isn’t being done now. There’s no Christian group I know of anywhere in the world that would force somebody to do something contrary to their deep-held religious beliefs or else face criminal penalties, but that’s what the homosexuals are trying to do here in America and I think it’s time pastors stand up and fight this monstrous thing.

If the gays want to go out and do their gay sex, that’s one thing, but if they want you to force you to accept it and solemnify it by marriage then that’s a different matter and it’s an infringement on people’s religious belief. What’s being done in Houston is a gay—the woman they elected is a homosexual, she’s a lesbian, and she’s trying to force pastors to conform to her beliefs. It’s wrong.

Part of the rant seems to reference the current news story about the wedding venue The Hitching Post in Idaho. It goes without saying that if you’ve read the news lately, NO ONE in Idaho is forcing anyone to marry same-sex couples at this point in time. No one has been threatened with jail time over forcing “ministers” to marry same-sex couples.

This is just more hyperbole by the extreme right wing to convince folks “the sky is falling.”

And it’s not.

Pat Robertson: Onslaught Of “Homosexual Behavior” Is Being Forced On US

Strange, I don’t remember forcing anyone to have sex with me…

The increasingly erratic Pat Robertson says that the SCOTUS decision to not review same-sex marriage appeals is forcing an “onslaught of homosexual behavior” on the United States.

The clip below then goes into a report about a business in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, which performs civil marriage ceremonies. The business has apparently refused to perform same-sex marriages even though marriage equality is the law of the land in Idaho now.

Being a “for-profit” business and not a church, the Hitching Post cannot claim “religious exemption” from the city public accommodation law which says businesses can’t discriminate against LGBT folk.

Watch Pat run off the rails again as he tells the owners of the business to get out of Idaho.

North Carolina Magistrates Directed To Perform Same-Sex Marriages

The state of North Carolina has informed magistrates — agents of the state whose responsibilities include performing civil marriages — that there are no special anti-gay discrimination rights.

The state has issued a memo saying the magistrates must comply with the law and perform marriages for same-sex couples, or they will be disciplined.

From the Washington Post:

North Carolina magistrates have been directed to perform civil marriages for same-sex couples or face suspension or dismissal from their state jobs.

A memo to state magistrates Wednesday said they would be violating their oaths of office if they refuse to marry gay or lesbian couples.

The directive came after a magistrate in Pasquotank County on Monday refused to marry two men, citing religious objections.

Some magistrates in Alamance County also said they wouldn’t marry gay couples.

A federal judge last week struck down North Carolina’s same-sex marriage ban as unconstitutional.

Public officials in states which have legal same-sex marriage cannot treat gay or lesbian couples differently.

Under state law, a magistrate who fails to perform his or her legal duties can face removal or suspension.

North Carolina Pastor: God Has Sent Ebola Because Same-Sex Marriage

Pastor Ron Baity has long railed against marriage equality.

After leading many anti-gay marriage rallies and being honored by the American Family Association with their 2012 “Watchman Award,” Mr. Baity is now spewing fire and brimstone about the “super-ebola” plague (or something) that will come to America because “gay.”

Tony Perkins Gets Trounced On Anti-Gay Lies On Fox News Sunday

In a delicious bit of TV watching, anti-gay Tony Perkins appeared on Fox News this past Sunday in what I’m sure he thought would be a friendly environment to pawn his false claims against marriage equality.

However, Ted Olson (conservative lawyer who has argued and won at the Supreme Court for gay marriage rights) was there to address many of Perkins untruths.

One of the lies Perkins tried to peddle was the anti-gay favorite – “Well, we know from the social science that children do best with a mom and a dad,” Perkins said. “If love is the factor, what boundaries are there?”

The Pulitzer-Prize winning PolitiFact has already addressed this lie calling it FALSE.

Meanwhile, Olson put forward facts. You know, those pesky things.

Watch below as even Fox News host Chris Wallace tries to get Perkins to say something based on anything factual.

On The 16th Anniversary of the Death of Matthew Shepard

On the 16th anniversary of the passing of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard, his parents talk on the painful memories of their son’s violent death, why they didn’t seek the death penalty for his attackers, and the Matthew Shepard Foundation, which they founded to raise awareness around homophobia and diversity.

NOM’s Brian Brown: Conservatives Will Lose Elections If They Don’t Hate On Gay Marriage More

In a recent post on the National Organization for Marriage’s blog, Brian Brown praises former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for threatening to leave the Republican Party if more conservatives don’t stand against equal rights for gays:

“Governor Huckabee is exactly right and is speaking for millions of Americans who are sick of Republican elitists remaining silent and refusing to fight for the survival of marriage, the principal building block of society and the foundation of civilization.

“Republicans who remain silent on marriage do so at their own peril and risk losing elections across the country. If conservatives see Republican candidates fail to lead on marriage — or worse, come out in favor of redefining marriage — then conservatives will abandon those candidates.

“We are grateful for those leaders who have spoken out to condemn the Supreme Court for their unprincipled and outrageous decision to allow the redefinition of marriage to occur in these states.

“We are prepared to work tirelessly to support them and others who lead in the fight to preserve marriage. But Governor Huckabee is right. If more Republican leaders do not speak up and join the fight, then millions of conservatives will abandon them and join with officials who will fight.

“Marriage is on the line in our country, and it’s time for people to get off the bench and into the battle.”

Anti-gay Peter LaBarbera Calls For Civil Disobedience Because “Gay”

Anti-gay Peter LaBarbera calls for civil disobedience because “gay:”

“Yesterday’s action by the Supreme Court only solidifies the idea that the powerful elites who dominate politics, media and culture do not care what the people think, expressed through the ballot box or their elected state legislators.

“And if ‘We the People’s’ votes do not count, then We live not in freedom but under tyranny. The notion that nine men and women in black robes know more about what constitutes marriage than 76 percent of Oklahoma’s voters is insulting and preposterous.

“Now is the time for civil disobedience on a massive scale: we hope that statesmen and citizens alike–in Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Indiana, Utah and Virginia—indeed, any state where the people’s will has been robbed by elitist judges—will reassert their state sovereignty against escalating judicial supremacy.

“The Scriptures are clear that homosexual practice is an offense against both God and the very bodies of those who practice it.”

Uganda: President Museveni Worries of Trade Boycott Over Anti-Gay Policies

Uganda President Yoweri Museveni

Although his country’s anti-gay law was struck down earlier this year on a technicality, President Yoweri Museveni is concerned that Uganda might suffer a trade boycott should the laws be reintroduced.

Via Reuters:

In a commentary on Friday in the state-run New Vision daily, Museveni said he was not worried by the aid cuts that followed the initial law, but warned of a trade boycott by companies in the West.

He said re-issuing the anti-gay law would likely antagonize consumers in the West, risking access to a rich export market. “To carelessly and needlessly open unnecessary wars with useful customers is irresponsible to say the least,” he wrote.

Homosexuality remains taboo in Uganda and many socially conservative African societies where some religious groups have branded it a corrupting Western import.

The original passage of the anti-gay law was celebrated with a rally in the city center against homosexuals, which Museveni attended and where he was thanked for signing the bill by religious leaders from various denominations.

Donors, who finance about 20 percent of Uganda’s annual budget, lauded its annulment, and some have resumed lending.

The U.S. described the court’s decision as “an important step in the right direction for human rights” in Uganda.

The overturn of the anti-gay law came just days before a visit by the Ugandan President to the US for a summit with other African leaders. Rumors abound that it was Museveni himself who worked behind the scenes to bring down the law to avoid an unpleasant reception here.

Brian Brown: “I Am An Extremist and I ‘Export Hate'”

Hate group leader Brian Brown of the ironically named National Organization for Marriage has penned an “essay” for the Washington Post in which he voices his disagreement with the Human Rights Campaign, who recently launched a new campaign which exposes some of the leaders of the anti-gay rights movement.

Part of that campaign that sheds light on Brown’s “export of hate” around the world.

Well, Brown is not very happy in this spotlight. He writes:

I readily and proudly plead guilty to the “crime” of not supporting that organization’s desire to redefine marriage. I have had the nerve to express that view not only here in America, but when invited to speak in other countries. Hence, in the distorted world of the campaign, I am an extremist and “export hate.”

[snip]

I am proud to have played some small role in this emerging global movement. One of the few things the Human Rights Campaign correctly notes is that I have spoken to conferences around the world.

However, these speeches focused not on “hate” or “division” but on the importance of individuals of different faiths, nationalities, cultures and political creeds uniting together in a shared defense of the truth of marriage and family. Working together with men and women dedicated to protecting the family is not the definition of hate, but love.

After all that high-minded hyperbole, Joe Jervis of JoeMyGod points out that Brown recently appeared at a Kremlin conference which concluded with a call for more nations to criminalize homosexuality.

So much for “the importance of individuals of different faiths, nationalities, cultures and political creeds.”

Sounds like hate to me. Read more about Brian Brown’s extremist work to undercut the rights of LGBT citizens around the world at the HRC’s “The Export of Hate.”
