News Round-Up: September 9, 2019

L-R Shannen Doherty, me, Ian Ziering, Jennie Garth, Michael Caprio
Some news items you might have missed: • Monday Memory: One of those “Can you believe this is happening?” moments – back when Beverly Hills 90210 star Ian Ziering was the celebrity guest host of Chippendales here in Las Vegas, and his two 90210 co-stars Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth came to see Ian in the show. This was snapped backstage before the show. #GoodtimesYahoo News: Four months before the wedding of a gay couple in the UK, the mother of one of the grooms received an anonymous note claiming it was the ‘consensus of the village’ that if the wedding was going to happen then “it should do so far, far away from the village.” The mother did not tell her son before the nuptials, but police are investigating the homophobic note. • OUT: Only five of the long list of Democratic presidential candidates have confirmed for both of the upcoming LGBTQ-centric events – the GLAAD-sponsored LGBTQ presidential forum in Iowa, and the HRC-sponsored LGBTQ CNN Town Hall. • TIME: Hollywood’s wonder gay Ryan Murphy has announced he is adapting the legendary Broadway musical A Chorus Line into a 10-episode miniseries for Netflix. #Hmmm • Hollywood Reporter: The cast and creators of the CW series Riverdale, as well as actress Octavia Spencer, will be honored at this year’s GLSEN Respect Awards on October 25 in Los Angeles. •  Out Music: Last month, I shared out singer/songwriter Kyle Motsinger’s groovy anthem for positivity, “Love On Each Other,” and today he drops the equally groovilicious music video. He’s paired his 70s disco beat bop with images of hippie love kids dancing and prancing in the park. Check it out below.

Trailer: The Gang Is Back Together For “BH90210”

The cast of BH90210

First teaser for the upcoming quasi-reboot of the hit 90s series, Beverly Hills 90210.

I write ‘quasi’ because there’s a twist to this revival. From the official synopsis:

Priestley, Garth, Ziering, Carteris, Green and Spelling will play heightened versions of themselves in a brand-new serialized drama – with a healthy dose of irreverence – that is inspired by their real lives and relationships.

Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself.

What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off?

The gang is back together (sans recently deceased Luke Perry) and find the old TV theme song creeping back into their mornings.

The show returns to FOX on Wednesday, August 7.

Actor Luke Perry, who shot to fame and teen idol status as loner Dylan McKay in the 1990s hit TV series, Beverly Hills, 90210, has died at the age of 52 after suffering a massive stroke last Wednesday.

TMZ reports that the actor passed away Monday morning at a hospital in Burbank, California.

Originally from Mansfield, Ohio, Perry began his acting career with roles on daytime dramas Another World and Loving.

But he became an overnight sensation with the launch of 90210 in 1990. Over several seasons, the handsome actor handled storylines that shined a light on alcohol abuse and drug addiction, as well as relationship struggles.

Perry starred in the series for several seasons but stepped away in 1995 only to return in 1998. He remained with the show until its finale in 2000.

Most recently, Perry has been starring on the CW’s Riverdale playing the conservative father of lead character, Archie Andrews (KJ Apa).

The same day of his stroke, Fox TV announced a six-episode summer reboot of 90210 with original stars Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green, and Tori Spelling returning to play ‘larger-than-life’ versions of themselves filming a reboot of the iconic show.

Perry was not scheduled to participate, but there were reports that he might make an appearance.

The actor will appear posthumously in Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Perry is survived by his daughter, Sophie, and his son, Jack.

Perry’s 90210 co-stars Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Cateris, and Jennie Garth issued these statements:

Riverdale star Luke Perry has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, according to TMZ.

The 52-year-old actor was rushed to a hospital Wednesday morning after paramedics arrived at his Sherman Oaks home.

A spokesman for the actor said, “Mr. Perry is currently under observation at the hospital.”

No other info about his condition is known at this time.

On the same day of his hospitalization, a reboot of his 1990s show, Beverly Hills, 90210 was announced.

According to TVLine, the kind-of reboot/revival of 90210 will air on Fox this summer.

Calling it a six-episode “event series,” six of the original cast members (Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris, Brian Austin Green and Tori Spelling) will return with the actors playing “heightened versions of themselves inspired by their real lives and relationships.”

The official logline reads:

“Having gone their separate ways since the original series ended 19 years ago, Jason, Jennie, Ian, Gabrielle, Brian and Tori reunite when one of them suggests it’s time to get a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot up and running. But getting it going may make for an even more delicious soap than the reboot itself. What will happen when first loves, old romances, friends and frenemies come back together, as this iconic cast – whom the whole world watched grow up together – attempts to continue from where they left off?”

While he initially found fame playing ‘Dylan McKay’ on the ‘90s hit series, Perry was not announced for the revival.

His Beverly Hills 90210 co-stars Ian Ziering & Shannen Doherty sent best wishes to Perry this morning on social media after hearing the news of his stroke.

Ian Ziering gets ready to become the next Magic Mike for Chippendales

Ian Ziering gets ready to become the next Magic Mike at Chippendales

A couple of pics from Ian Ziering’s final rehearsals for Chippendales in Las Vegas at the Rio All-Suites Hotel show he’s ready to become the next “Magic Mike” – or we should really be saying “Magic Ian.” Clearly the semi-finalist from Dancing With The Stars has the moves down.

Ian Ziering opens tonight with the Chippendales and appears as the celebrity guest host for the remainder of the month.

I’m attending Ian’s opening night, so planning to have pics of the event tomorrow. Even in rehearsal clothes, Ian looks AMAZING. Shoulders, pecs, biceps, triceps – he’s got it all.  We should all look so good at 49!
