Sweden Becomes 32nd Member Of NATO

Two years after Russia invaded Ukraine, in part to stop the expansion of NATO, Sweden has formally joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, becoming the 32nd member of the military collective. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is currently in Washington, D.C., to deliver the final documentation. https://twitter.com/NBCNews/status/1765750558281883981 From NBC News:

Kristersson said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had informed him that Sweden had been formally invited to join after all member states accepted the country’s accession protocol.

For NATO, the accession of Sweden and Finland — which shares a 830-mile border with Russia — is the most significant expansion for decades. It is also a blow for Russian President Vladimir Putin who has sought prevent any further strengthening of the alliance.

Sweden will benefit from the alliance’s common defense guarantee under which an attack on one member is regarded as an attack on all.
