Speaker Johnson Criticizes Retaliatory Military Strikes In Syria & Iraq

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) issued a statement criticizing the Biden administration’s first set of retaliatory U.S. strikes on Iranian-linked militia groups in the Middle East in response to the attack on a U.S. base in Jordan that killed three American service members. “The tragic deaths of three U.S. troops in Jordan, perpetrated by Iran-backed militias, demanded a clear and forceful response, Johnson said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the administration waited for a week and telegraphed to the world, including to Iran, the nature of our response.” https://twitter.com/SpeakerJohnson/status/1753592665952645343 More from The Hill:

The U.S. military announced earlier Friday that the Biden administration had carried out an initial round of airstrikes in retaliation for last weekend’s attack in Jordan, employing “more than 125 precision munitions” at multiple sites in Iraq and Syria.

Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims, director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he was confident the strikes damaged military capabilities.

“We hit exactly what we meant to hit,” Sims said. “We confidently struck targets that will impact their ability to conduct future strikes against Americans.”

What’s clear is the Biden administration and the Pentagon took a minute to be strategic and accurate in choosing its targets instead of just firing off some missiles in a knee-jerk reaction. A statement from the White House on Friday said that the response from the U.S. “will continue at times and places of our choosing.” And Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said, “We do not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else, but the president and I will not tolerate attacks on American forces.” I’ll note that Johnson has no military experience. And historically, it has always been bad form to criticize a president who’s in the middle of defending American interests.
