Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) issued a statement criticizing the Biden administration’s first set of retaliatory U.S. strikes on Iranian-linked militia groups in the Middle East in response to the attack on a U.S. base in Jordan that killed three American service members. “The tragic deaths of three U.S. troops in Jordan, perpetrated by Iran-backed militias, demanded a clear and forceful response, Johnson said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the administration waited for a week and telegraphed to the world, including to Iran, the nature of our response.” https://twitter.com/SpeakerJohnson/status/1753592665952645343 More from The Hill:
The U.S. military announced earlier Friday that the Biden administration had carried out an initial round of airstrikes in retaliation for last weekend’s attack in Jordan, employing “more than 125 precision munitions” at multiple sites in Iraq and Syria.
Lt. Gen. Douglas Sims, director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said he was confident the strikes damaged military capabilities.
“We hit exactly what we meant to hit,” Sims said. “We confidently struck targets that will impact their ability to conduct future strikes against Americans.”
What’s clear is the Biden administration and the Pentagon took a minute to be strategic and accurate in choosing its targets instead of just firing off some missiles in a knee-jerk reaction. A statement from the White House on Friday said that the response from the U.S. “will continue at times and places of our choosing.” And Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said, “We do not seek conflict in the Middle East or anywhere else, but the president and I will not tolerate attacks on American forces.” I’ll note that Johnson has no military experience. And historically, it has always been bad form to criticize a president who’s in the middle of defending American interests.
Sometimes you are allowed to be an American first, Mike. This is one of those times. But you don’t have it anywhere in any speck of your DNA to do that. You are a Trump sycophant using dead soldiers, whose families specifically asked you not to, for partisan politics.

You are despicable. Didn’t even wait for our aircrews to land before issuing this pathetic crap. You are going to be forgotten by history as the loser small town nut job lawyer who accomplished nothing in his short time as Speaker at the head of the most useless Congress ever.
— Fred Wellman (@FPWellman) February 3, 2024
You are despicable. You seem psychologically incapable of discarding petty politics for even a moment to be, simply, an American.

This little man never served a day. Has no clue about military strategy. But that’s still not an excuse to attack your own country. Instead, express your gratitude to the US military for their service and move on to your extremist shenanigans.
You are an embarrassment. — (@ChidiNwatu) February 3, 2024
And PS, on trying to score political points on our dead military is a truly malevolent attack on their, and their family’s and loved ones’ sacrifice. You should stop calling yourself a Christian because that’s Satan whispering in your ear (when it’s not Trump), not God.

Just an appalling statement from the Speaker of the US Congress.
Biden is our Commander in Chief and to publicly disagree w/ him when he exercises this power telegraphs weakness to our enemies. Shame on you for this partisan and offensive statement, Speaker Johnson. — August V (@AugustCohen4) February 3, 2024
Shameful. Your inexperience is not an excuse for the disloyalty to America you show. You want to make America great again? Remember the words of Republican Sen. Arthur Vandenberg who reminded colleagues in 1947 that “we must stop partisan politics at the water’s edge.”
