By a vote of 86-11, the U.S. Senate has passed a Russia sanctions bill designed to stifle the Russian economy and bring an end to a war that started in 2022 when Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine that has since cost thousands of civilian lives.
The bipartisan legislation, championed by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), would penalize countries that continue to buy Russian oil, gas and other exports seeking to deprive Putin of revenues fueling the war. The bill also extends sanctions against Iran.
This marks the Senate’s most substantial move yet during Donald Trump’s second term to shift the dynamic of the more than four-year war, which has now churned longer than World War I.
Trump has reportedly given his support to the sanctions package, and is putting pressure on the House to approve it and send it to the White House for his signature.
