Senate Committee Rejects Trump Proposal To End Life-Saving HIV Programs

The Senate Appropriations Committee dismissed the Trump administration’s plan to end the CDC’s initiatives for HIV prevention and monitoring, along with significant proposed reductions to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget.

Instead, they moved forward with a proposal to boost the agency’s funding by $400 million.

The White House’s budget had suggested a drastic reduction in NIH funding by $18 billion, equating to a 40 percent cut.

The committee turned down these cuts and others related to HIV prevention, treatment, and care, passing the bill with strong bipartisan backing, reflected in a 26-3 vote.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), the committee’s vice chair said, “To the scientists wondering if there will even be an NIH by the end of this administration: this committee’s resounding message is yes.”
