Sen. Laphonza Butler Will Not Run For Senate Seat In 2024

, appointed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom just weeks ago to fill Dianne Feinstein’s seat, says she will not run for the Senate seat next fall. Butler is the first out Black lesbian to serve in the U.S. Senate. Her announcement clears the way for an open race that, so far, includes three Democratic members of Congress — Representatives Katie Porter, Adam Schiff, and Barbara Lee. Steve Garvey, former pro baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, has announced his candidacy as a Republican.
