School Board Member’s Mother Removed From Meeting After Physical Altercation

Tensions ran high at a Forest Hills school board meeting in Ohio over Superintendent Larry Hook’s decision to paint over a student-created mural at the start of the school year. Depicting the hands of people of different races, the mural signaled love and solidarity through symbols of equality and acceptance of various sexual orientations. Students at Nagel Middle School created the mural years ago, but when students returned to the building this year, some were surprised to see it covered by a banner promoting Forest Hills’s new “Culture Blueprint.” That banner was torn down. Shortly after, the mural was completely painted over, sparking outrage from some students and parents.

Dozens showed up to Wednesday’s school board meeting holding signs of the mural. Parents and students spoke during public comment in opposition to the superintendent’s decision.

One attendee, identified as the mother of school board member Katie Stewart, grew angry over parents and students supporting the mural. She was removed by law enforcement after snatching the phone of another audience member. Interestingly, Stewart’s own children reportedly attend a private Catholic school.
