Report: NYC Shooter Was Targeting NFL

The gunman who shot and killed 4 people at a New York City office building in Midtown on Monday, was reportedly carrying a note critical of the NFL and claimed he had a degenerative brain disease due to playing football.

After Shane Tamura of Las Vegas killed four people at the building — a police officer, a security guard, a financial executive and a real estate associate —  he was later found dead on the 33rd floor with a gunshot wound to the chest.

The police said the man accused of killing four people in Midtown Manhattan on Monday referred to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, and asked that his brain be studied, in a three-page note found in his wallet.

From the New York Times:

A three-page note discovered in his wallet included his claim that the physical nature of football, which he played in high school in Southern California, had caused him to suffer with the degenerative condition chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E., the police said.

In his note, the gunman asked that his brain be examined for signs of C.T.E., which can be definitively diagnosed only posthumously. The city’s Office of Chief Medical Examiner said on Tuesday that it would test his brain for a degenerative disease as part of his autopsy.

The officer killed was Didarul Islam, 36, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served as a police officer in New York City for 3 1/2 years.

More from my local NBC News affiliate here in Las Vegas.

In an interview, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) said this incident is a good reason to bring back “stop-and-frisk” policies to NYC.

The shooter was openly carrying a long gun – “stop-and-frisk” would have stopped this how…?
