Relationship Between Trump Admin + Greenland Continues To Devolve

The relationship between Greenland and the Trump administration continues to devolve as Second Lady Usha Vance’s trip to the Arctic Island has been pared down to just a visit to the Pituffik Space Base. From NJ.com:

The White House announced earlier this week that second lady Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, would be visiting Greenland with her son and a U.S. delegation to visit historical sites and attend a dogsled race.

However, those plans were changed after the Office of the Vice President announced that Vance would be joining his wife on Friday for the visit.

Danish outlet TV2 correspondent Jesper Steinmetz reported that U.S. representatives were knocking on doors in Nuuk, Greenland, to rally support for Vance’s wife ahead of her visit.

When residents were asked if they would like to visit with the second lady, the responses were overwhelmingly, “No, thanks”, according to the report.

More from Newsweek:

The second lady’s trip has also drawn sharp criticism from the governments of Greenland and Denmark.

Mette Frederiksen, Denmark’s Prime Minister, told Danish channel TV 2 on Tuesday: “I have to say that it is unacceptable pressure being placed on Greenland and Denmark in this situation. And it is pressure that we will resist.”

Vice President JD Vance announced later on Tuesday that he would be joining the visit to Greenland. “There was so much excitement around Usha’s visit to Greenland this Friday that I decided that I didn’t want her to have all that fun by herself, and so I’m going to join her,” he said in a video post on X, formerly Twitter.

“So much excitement…”

Last night, Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric regarding acquiring Greenland as a U.S. territory last night in the Oval Office going so far as to say, “We need Greenland…we’re going to have to have it.” Denmark’s Defense Minister called those remarks an escalation, saying the statements about a close ally do not suit a U.S. president. “I need to clearly speak out against what I see as an escalation from the American side. The tightened rhetoric is in every way far-fetched,” he said. While Trump keeps framing the trip as “being invited” by the people of Greenland, in the report below it’s clear Greenlanders are not interested in hosting the U.S. contingent.
