The 75th annual Tony Awards were held last night, June 12, at Radio City Music Hall where Company and The Lehman Trilogy led the 2022 celebration with five wins each.
A Strange Loop took home the award for Best Musical. The show also won the award for Best Book.
The Lehman Trilogy took home five awards, including Best Play.
Company, with reimagined gender casting, also took home five awards, including Best Revival. Patti LuPone and Matt Doyle won in their respective categories for their performances in the show. Marianne Elliott also won the Best Direction of a Musical award.
Three of the four major production categories (Best Play, Best Musical, Best Revival of a Music, Best Revival of a Play) had LGBTQ components: A Strange Loop, Company, and Take Me Out.
Toby Marlow’s win for Best Original Score of SIX: The Musical (with co-writer Lucy Moss) made him the first non-binary Tony winner in history.
Jennifer Hudson reached EGOT status as a co-producer of A Strange Loop. She’s only the second Black woman to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, following Whoopi Goldberg.
Hudson previously won an Emmy for her work on the Oculus Quest-based interactive fairy tale Baba Yaga, a Best R&B Album Grammy for her self-titled album and Best Musical Theater Album for The Color Purple, and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Dreamgirls.
The evening was hosted by newly-minted Oscar winner Ariana DeBose who knocked it out of the park with an excellent opening number.
Paradise Square, which earned 10 Tony nods, performed “Paradise Square / Let It Burn” featuring Joaquina Kalukango, who shortly thereafter won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her performance.
While I believe Kalukango had a small issue hearing the orchestra, this was by far my favorite performance of the night.
The evening also featured a touching tribute to late Broadway legend Stephen Sondheim by frequent Sondheim collaborator Bernadette Peters. The three-time Tony winner re-created her performance from the original cast of Into the Woods with “Children Will Listen.”

Tony winner Billy Porter (Kinky Boots) delivered a sensitive rendition of My Fair Lady’s “On The Street Where You Live” during the In Memoriam segment.
