Trump Says He’d Have Run Into School Shooting “Even If I Didn’t Have A Weapon”

Speaking to the nation’s governors today about the deputy sheriff who failed to intervene during the gun massacre at Stoneman Douglas High School, Donald Trump said, “I really believe I’d run in there, even if I didn’t have a weapon.”

This would be the same Donald Trump who dodged the Vietnam draft five times claiming he had “bone spurs” in one of his feet (he can’t seem to remember which foot).

Six Years Ago Today

Trayvon Martin (L) and George Zimmerman (R)

Six years ago today, unarmed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by 28-year-old George Zimmerman in Florida.

At the time, President Obama’s statement – “Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago” – was deemed “divisive” by the conservative right.

Now look what we have in the White House.

Federal Appeals Court Rules Civil Rights Act Of 1964 Bans Anti-Gay Discrimination In Workplace

In a huge win for the LGBTQ community, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 bans anti-gay discrimination.

The case examined whether Donald Zarda, a now-deceased skydiver who alleged he was fired from Altitude Express for being gay, could sue under existing civil rights law because sexual-orientation discrimination is a form of sex discrimination.

From Dominic Holden at Buzzfeed:

The Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit ruled Monday, “We now hold that sexual orientation discrimination constitutes a form of discrimination ‘because of . . . sex,’ in violation of Title VII.” In doing so, the court overruled a lower court — and a precedent from two previous court cases — and remanded the case to be litigated in light of their reading of Title VII.

The decision holds national implications due to its high tier in the judicial system, and because it’s seen as a litmus test of the Trump administration’s ability — or inability — to curb LGBT rights through court activism. The Justice Department had injected itself into the case even though it wasn’t a party to the lawsuit and doesn’t normally involve itself in private employment disputes.

“Sexual orientation is a function of sex and, by extension, sexual orientation discrimination is a subset of sex discrimination,” the majority wrote.

In reaching its decision Monday, the court pointed out that anti-gay discrimination would not exist “but for” a person’s sex. That is to say, gays, lesbians, and bisexuals would not experience this type of unequal treatment had been born a different gender, or were attracted to a different sex.

Robert A. Katzmann, the 2nd Circuit’s chief judge who authored the majority ruling, was joined by nine other judges while three judges dissented.

This ruling is also a blow to the Trump administration which was not a party to the case.

The Justice Department sent Deputy Assistant Attorney General Hashim Mooppan to take part in oral arguments in September arguing that despite Title VII employers should be able to fire workers for being gay.

Zarda had apparently told a female student as they prepared for a sky-diving jump that he was “100 percent gay” in an attempt to make the woman less anxious about the close physical contact involved in being strapped to her instructor.

The woman’s boyfriend complained to the school about the encounter, and that led to Zarda’s dismissal.

This ruling now allows Zarda’s estate to file a discrimination lawsuit against Altitude Express.

The case was heard by all 13 eligible judges of the 2nd Circuit, known as an en banc hearing, meaning the only option for left for the haters is to head to the U.S. Supreme Court.

USA Today Ad Features Bipartisan Support For Transgender Soldiers

From the Human Rights Campaign:

Today, the Human Rights Campaign, Lambda Legal, OutServe-SLDN, American Military Partner Association, and Gender Justice League published a full-page USA Today ad featuring leading military, national security and bipartisan officials who agree with the majority of Americans that the Trump-Pence Administration’s ban on transgender troops is wrong and hurts military readiness. The ad encourages the vast majority of Americans who oppose the Trump-Pence Administration’s effort to ban up to 15,000 active duty transgender troops to call the White House and demand they put our military readiness and brave servicemembers ahead of politics.

The advertisement reads, “Military leaders, national security officials, bipartisan lawmakers in Congress and a majority of Americans oppose the Trump-Pence ban on transgender troops, which would hurt military readiness. Tell Donald Trump and Mike Pence not to put their politics ahead of our troops. Call the White House: 202-456-1414.”

Making clear the bipartisan opposition to the ban, the ad features quotes from Senators John McCain (R-AZ), Susan Collins (R-ME), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and Richard Shelby (R-AL); Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford; Former Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus; Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen; Former Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning; Former Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James; and General Martin Dempsey.

Bolding is mine.

As I reported over the weekend, Defense Secretary James Mattis delivered his recommendations on transgender soldiers in the military to Donald Trump on Friday evening. Political insiders say Mattis is expected to support allowing trans soldiers to continue serving in the U.S. armed forces.

One more time – Call the White House at 202-456-1414 and leave a message saying you agree with the majority of Americans that transgender soldiers who are willing and able to serve the country they love should have that right.

New iPhone X Ad Celebrates Marriage Equality In Australia – “First Dance”

After a long, long journey to marriage equality (that included an official mail-in survey of the entire nation showing over 60% approval), same-sex weddings have begun in Australia.

And in a nod to the idea that the best camera is the one you have on you, Apple has created a new ad featuring those most romantic of wedding moments – a couple’s first dance – captured at LGBTQ weddings that were shot entirely on iPhone Xs.

Watch the very sweet spot, titled “First Dance,” below.

Trump Tries To Take Full Credit For “Lowest” Unemployment Since 1973

Donald Trump recently tweeted that unemployment claims are “at the lowest level since 1973.”

Now, at first read you would think (and the Trumpster would WANT you to think) that he deserves the credit for all that.

BUT – here are the facts.

Thanks to the 8 years of fiscal policies under George W. Bush, the United States fell into the worst financial crater since the Great Depression.

During Bush’s last year in office the U.S. economy lost 5 million jobs. And that slide continued into Obama’s first year in office as it takes several months for a new administration’s policies to take effect.

Unemployment peaked at 10% during the Great Recession in October of 2009. Over the course of Obama’s 8 years in office that number fell to 4.8%.

That’s a drop of 5.2%.

See that big slide in the graph above?

Under Trump unemployment has fallen from 4.8% to 4.1%. That constitutes a decline of .7%.

See what the simple math shows?

Trump wants you to think he got us all the way down to 4.1% when in reality it was Obama who did the heavy lifting from 10% to 4.8%.

Got it?

Tongan Olympian Pita Taufatofua Goes Shirtless For PyeongChang Closing Ceremonies

Summer & Winter Olympian Pita Taufatofua

Ah, yeah.

I knew everyone’s favorite Olympian from Tonga – Pita Taufatofua – wouldn’t let us down for the closing ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The unlikely Winter Olympian, Tonga’s second ever, oiled up once again for the closing ceremonies in PyeongChang today.

After capturing the world’s attention in the 2016 Rio Summer Games, Pita decided he wouldn’t wait four more years to compete at the Olympics again. Instead, he learned to cross-country ski from scratch in the course of a year and qualified for these Winter Games.

Check my full report on his incredible, inspiring story here.

Did he think he’d medal? No.

But watch this interview below as he explains that, for him, the journey was about getting out of comfort zones and inspiring others to do the same.

This is Olympic spirit.

You go, Pita. I’m still cheering for you.

Texas: Trans Wrestler Forced To Compete As Girl Wins 2nd State Title

As I reported yesterday, transgender high school senior Mack Beggs returned to the state wrestling finals this weekend after winning his division last year.

Beggs has asked to compete in the boys division but the University Interscholastic League (UIL), which regulates high school athletics in Texas, made him compete in the girls division based on the gender listed on his birth certificate.

Beggs is undergoing hormone replacement therapy under the care of a doctor, which the UIL allows. Beggs said last year that he’s taking less than the recommended dosage of testosterone in order to stay within the “allowed level.”

Beggs’ weekly injection of .18 milliliters (36 milligrams) is medically prescribed and monitored for the primary purposes of stopping his menstrual cycles and allowing him to grow body and facial hair.

That dosage is tiny compared to what male body builders typically inject – 500 to 1,000 milligrams of testosterone per week.

Over the past years, parents of Beggs’ competitors have been vocal saying Beggs’ use of testosterone constituted an illegal advantage over girls calling the hormone treatment “steroid use.”

On Saturday evening, the transgender male wrestler ended his perfect 36-0 season by winning his second straight UIL girls Class 6A state title in the 110-pound weight class.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, there were a few boos last year but those cheering for Beggs drowned the haters out. This year the boos were back and more pronounced.

What I want to make absolutely clear is that Beggs’ won fair and square playing by the rules. Period.

Beggs’ focus moves now to “top surgery” in the next few months and then on college. He has already been offered a wrestling scholarship at an out of state college.

The NCAA, which regulates college athletics, allows transgender wrestlers to compete with their gender.

Watch video below of the last minute of Mack’s title-winning match.
