New Music: The Beaches ‘Lesbian Of The Year’

Canadian alt-rock group The Beaches have dropped their evocative new ballad “Lesbian Of The Year,” which chronicles member Leandra Earl’s deeply personal story of coming to terms with her sexuality later in life.

“‘Lesbian Of The Year’ is about the shame I felt coming out later in life and the pressure of trying to live up to ‘Lesbian of the Year,’ a title given to me by my sweet fans,” shares Leandra.

“I feel regret for not knowing myself sooner,” she adds. “But this song is also about the journey of self discovery & sexual identity and accepting that everyone is on their own timeline and we’ll get there when we get there.”

The sentiment, echoed through the song’s vulnerable, melancholy lyrics, is relatable to many who’ve also dealt with similar emotions as they’ve grappled with self-acceptance.

From the band’s upcoming album No Hard Feelings out August 29.
