Orville Peck shares the music video for “Already Gone,” from his highly anticipated album Mule, set for release on September 18.
The new collection chronicles the worst year of Peck’s life – when he broke up with his partner, spiraled to the depths of addiction, went to rehab, got sober, and faced a reckoning with both the public and private versions of himself.
The music video for “Already Gone” alternates between Peck’s drab days in rehab (therapy sessions, urine tests, endless paper pill cups) with choreographed fantasy as orderlies and fellow residents twist and twirl to the raucous beat.
Peck’s rich baritone strikes a triumphant tone as he sings, “Ohh-hoo! Put me in the slammer!” But the verses tilt to darker emotions:
Lonesome heart by design, broken head in decline
Telling anyone who’ll listen, it’ll all be fine
Just one more man at the end of his line
Peck shares in a press statement: “‘Already Gone’ lands early in the album’s story, when I first entered the rehab facility. I accepted the decision to seek treatment but deep down I believed I didn’t have a problem.”
“The video reflects my arrogant mindset as I picture the experience as a lighthearted musical, while in reality, I was in total crisis,” he adds.
Peck kicks off the first leg of his “Man Turned Mule” Tour on September 18 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
