Cody Conner, a Virginia Beach dad, has gone viral with his straight-to-the-heart speech at an October 10 Virginia Beach school board meeting where he addressed newly enacted discriminatory policies targeting LGBTQ students. This is easily my favorite thing today. Conner began his speech, “You are never going to find a right way to do the wrong thing, and Governor Youngkin’s policies are wrong.” Conner was referencing the Virginia governor’s “model policies” for public schools that include forcing students to use the bathroom and sports team that matches the gender they were assigned at birth. The policies also allow a teacher to deadname students if paperwork isn’t filled out by their parents, and require the school to inform parents if a student is questioning their identity. Conner has reportedly addressed 17 school board meetings after he moved his family to Virginia Beach. The Conners moved from rural Virginia to Virginia Beach so that their 13-year-old trans daughter, who is now in the 8th grade, would have a supportive environment. Youngkin’s new policies changed that. Conner’s remarks broke it down for the school board in simple terms:
“Never in history have the good guys been the segregationist group pushing to legislate identity. Never in history have the good guys been closely connected with and supported by hate groups like the Proud Boys.”
“And the good guys don’t put Hitler quotes for inspiration on the front of their newsletters. News flash: they’re the bad guys. They’re the bad guys supporting bad policy. And if you support the same bad policy, guess what? You’re one of the bad guys, too.”
