McCarthy: Matt Gaetz Ousted Me Because I Wouldn’t Kill His Ethics Investigation

During a discussion with students at Georgetown University on Monday, former Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy said the quiet part out loud when he explained why he was ousted as Speaker. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) probably choked a bit when he read this. “I’ll give you the truth why I’m not Speaker: because one person, a member of Congress, wanted me to stop an ethics complaint because he slept with a 17-year-old girl. Did he do it or not? I don’t know.” As you’ll recall, McCarthy was removed as House Speaker in early October 2023 after Gaetz followed through on his longstanding threat to file a motion to vacate the chair. https://twitter.com/HowardMortman/status/1778025391304691957 But ousting McCarthy didn’t solve all of Gaetz’s problems. In February, ABC News reported that House investigators had stepped up their probe into Gaetz:

House investigators have recently ramped up their probe of Gaetz, which ABC News previously reported is looking into allegations that he paid for sex, as well as allegations about drug use and potential lobbying violations, according to sources familiar with the committee’s work.

The DOJ examined related allegations in their yearslong probe before deciding not to bring charges.

Since the start of 2024, the Ethics Committee has contacted numerous witnesses, including Greenberg and the congressman’s ex-girlfriend.
