Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) admitted to reporters today that he will “probably” be removed from his position after a vote on Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) introduced a ‘motion to vacate’ the speakership. https://twitter.com/RpsAgainstTrump/status/1709222592891040161 There will be two votes in the House on the issue. First, a vote on a “motion to table,” which would kill Gaetz’s move, but no one seems to think that will fly. Next, there will be the actual vote on the “motion to vacate.” At least six Republicans have said they would back Gaetz’s motion. In the narrow GOP majority, just a handful of Republican opponents of McCarthy could put the fate of his Speakership in the hands of Democrats. Much of the media is reporting that Democrats have no intention of “saving” McCarthy’s speakership. During a closed-door meeting of the House Dems, a video montage of McCarthy bashing the Democrats on news shows was reportedly played. That certainly didn’t endear McCarthy to any Ds. https://twitter.com/MeetThePress/status/1709306689600549337 By the way – the “motion to vacate” has only occurred once before. Back in 1910, Speaker Joseph G. Cannon (R-IL) faced a revolt within his own party. But the “motion to vacate” was tabled. What no one seems to know is: who can get 218 votes and become the next Speaker? The House will be basically frozen without a Speaker of the House. https://twitter.com/washingtonpost/status/1709180339585765587
