Republican leaders in areas hit hard by Hurricane Helene are begging folks to stop lying about FEMA funds being “withheld” and denouncing those spreading skepticism about the rescue efforts. From The Hill:
A mayor in Tennessee joined other local officials Friday to denounce skepticism and rumors that have swirled around the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) response to the devastation in the southeastern U.S. from Hurricane Helene.
Mayor Glenn Jacobs (R), who serves Knox County, Tenn., signaled in a post online that the attacks on the administration could make recovery efforts more difficult. The White House pushed back on these claims Friday, calling out the GOP for “using Hurricane Helene to lie and divide us.”
It also follows skepticism from former President Trump around the Biden administration’s response to the deadly storm, when he claimed FEMA would use hurricane funds on migrants. The White House pushed back on these claims Friday, calling out the GOP for “using Hurricane Helene to lie and divide us.”
Two things: 1) To my knowledge, FEMA, TEMA, nor anyone else is confiscating supplies. Please quit spreading those rumors as they are counterproductive to response efforts. 2) If everyone could maybe please put aside the hate for a bit and pitch in to help, that would be great.

During an event Friday in North Carolina, U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Florida), who moderated an event hosting Donald Trump, said it was her opinion that federal authorities have “intentionally not helped out residents” because “it’s red communities impacted.”
Luna: I do believe that they’ve intentionally, and this is my opinion, not helped out those residents because it’s red communities that are impacted. pic.twitter.com/J7CbAJlzVQ

Anna Paulina Luna voted to cut FEMA by $2.5 billion.
That’s not all. Luna supports a #Project2025 agenda that would: ❌ End NOAA and its vital storm forecasts and warnings ❌ Eliminate aid for families and businesses rebuilding after storms. We deserve better. pic.twitter.com/8dOHN2CmoV — Whitney Fox for Congress (FL-13) (@whitfox) October 2, 2024
Earlier this week, convicted felon Donald Trump repeatedly spread falsehoods about the federal response to Hurricane Helene despite claiming not to be politicizing the disaster.
The former president claimed upon landing in Valdosta that President Joe Biden was “sleeping” and not responding to Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who he said was “calling the president and hasn’t been able to get him.” He repeated the claim at an event with reporters after being told Kemp said he had spoken to Biden.
“He’s lying, and the governor told him he was lying,” Biden said Monday. The White House previously announced that Biden spoke by phone Sunday night with Kemp and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, as well as Scott Matheson, mayor of Valdosta, Georgia, and Florida Emergency Management Director John Louk.
Kemp confirmed Monday morning that he spoke to Biden the night before.
Biden makes a great point. The most despicable part of Trump’s lies is that he is making the victims think nobody is going to help them and causing them more pain and stress with his lies. He’s the worst human being to ever serve as president. https://t.co/agi9c0ui0h
