On Monday, prosecutors revealed in a court filing that the former congressman, who lost his gig in the House earlier this month, is in talks to plead guilty.
“The parties are presently engaged in plea negotiations with the goal of resolving this matter without the need for a trial,” prosecutors wrote in the filing.
On Tuesday, Santos’s lawyer, Joseph Murray, told Judge Joanna Seybert that he believed an agreement could be reached, saying in court, “We should focus on the plea deal [negotiations]. I believe they can be fruitful.”

goes on to surmise that it’s probably “the reality of potentially going to prison for more than two decades set in and caused him to reconsider his stance on a plea deal.” Santos got some good news today as the judge overseeing the trial regarding his fraud/campaign finance charges pushed back against prosecutors’ request to move his trial up to April 2024. The judge ruled the original September date will remain on the calendar.
