Justin Trudeau To Step Down As Canada’s Prime Minister

Justin Trudeau, who has been facing increasing calls to step aside, says he intends to step down as prime minister once the Liberal Party has chosen a new leader.

“I intend to resign as party leader as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process.” Trudeau met Canada’s governor general Mary Simon this morning and asked her to prorogue parliament, which would end the current parliamentary session and kill all legislative business that hasn’t passed. Trudeau said he would remain in both roles until his replacement has been chosen through a party election.
