Japanese High Court Rules Denying Same-Sex Marriage Unconstitutional

A Japanese high court has ruled banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and called for lawmakers to address the lack of legal recognition of same-sex couples. https://twitter.com/CBSNews/status/1768238145651290579 From CBS News:

The Sapporo High Court ruling said not allowing same-sex couples to marry and enjoy the same benefits as straight couples violates their fundamental right to have a family.

A lower court issued a similar ruling earlier Thursday, becoming the sixth district court to do so.

But the Tokyo District Court ruling was only a partial victory for Japan’s LGBTQ+ community calling for equal marriage rights, as it doesn’t change or overturn the current civil union law that describes marriage as between a man and a woman.

The court doesn’t have the power to overturn the current marriage law, leaving the task to lawmakers. Japan is the only G-7 country (comprised of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States) that doesn’t allow same-sex marriage. https://twitter.com/NewsHour/status/1768390656362152277
