House Passes Trump Spending/Tax Cut Bill 218-214

The House has passed Trump’s sweeping tax/spending “Big Beautiful Bill” by a vote of 218 to 214.

From the Washington Post:

The $3.4 trillion measure extends tax cuts from Trump’s first term and implements new campaign promises — such as eliminating income taxes on tips and overtime wages — while spending hundreds of billions of dollars on immigration enforcement and defense.

It raises the country’s borrowing cap by $5 trillion, staving off a debt default that the Treasury was weeks away from breaching.

To offset the cost of the bill, the legislation cuts about $1 trillion from Medicaid, the federal health insurance program for low-income individuals and people with disabilities, and other health care programs.

It reduces spending on anti-hunger programs, including SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program formerly known as food stamps, by $185 billion.

According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, nearly 17 million will lose health care coverage or subsidies over the next ten years. And the bill would add about $4 trillion to the national debt.

All Democrats and just two Republicans voted against the bill:

• Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is a fiscal hawk who strongly opposes measures that would increase the federal deficit and add significantly to the national debt.

• Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) is a moderate in a battleground district that Democrats hope to flip. He has publicly expressed concerns about cuts to Medicaid funding.

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), the Democratic leader, delayed the vote by speaking on the House floor for 8 hours and 45 minutes (a new record) in order to give Americans time to call their representatives.

The bill now goes to his desk to be signed into law.
