Highlights From The 2025 Tony Awards

I was so pleased with the results of the 2025 Tony Awards last night. So many great performances, and so many of my personal favorites taking home trophies.

There were many LGBTQ folks in the mix including:

Following her performance at WorldPride this weekend, Cynthia Erivo was fantastic as the evening’s hostess serving up sass, ten costume changes and a terrific opening number.

Cole Escola made history as the first out non-binary person to win the Tony for Best Actor in a Play for their brilliant  performance in Oh, Mary! (which was written and nominated for Best Play by Escola).

Sam Pinkleton, the show’s director, also won for Best Direction of a Play.

Maybe Happy Ending took home six Tony Awards — the most of any show — including best new musical. The play’s director, Michael Arden, closed his acceptance speech with, “If there are any queer people watching, Happy Pride!”

Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Purpose scored the Tony Award for Best Play.

Out designer Paul Tazewell won for Best Costume Design of a Musical for Death Becomes Her fresh of his win at the Oscars this year.

Broadway legend Harvey Fierstein received the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.

And my fingers-crossed/hoped for win for Nicole Scherzinger for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for Sunset Blvd. (which also won for Best Revival of a Musical and sent me through the roof.
