GLAAD: Fewer LGBTQ Film Characters In 2023, Uptick In Queer Characters Of Color

GLAAD has released the 12th edition of its Studio Responsibility Index, which tracked the “quantity, quality and diversity” of LGBTQ characters in films released in 2023. In conducting its research, GLAAD looked at 256 films released in 2023 by ten Hollywood distributors: A24, Amazon, Apple TV+, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, Sony Pictures Entertainment, the Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros. Discovery.

The study found fewer LGBTQ characters in 2023 overall, but there was a slight uptick in queer characters of color. The new report shows:

• Out of 256 films, 70 included an LGBTQ character (or 27.3%), a decrease from last year’s record high of 100 out of 350 films (or 28.5%).

• Those 70 films featured 170 LGBTQ characters. This is a decrease of 122 characters from the previous year.

• Of those 170 LGBTQ characters, 78 represented characters of color – an increase of 6 percent.

• Among the 170 LGBTQ characters counted, there are a total of two transgender characters down from 13 in 2022.

In rating the ten film companies, only Amazon received a “Good” rating. Apple TV+ scored the only “Failing” grade, while the rest were deemed between “Fair,” “Insufficient,” or “Poor.” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a press release:

“Though there is inconsistent progress on LGBTQ representation from major distributors year to year, recent films with LGBTQ leads prove that our stories can absolutely be both critical and commercial successes — when they have the full support of the studio behind them.”
