GMA weekend anchor Gio Benitez (screen capture)Out ABC News correspondent Gio Benitez officially took his seat as permanent weekend co-anchor of Good Morning America on Saturday.
Following an introduction from co-anchors Whit Johnson and Janai Norman, viewers were treated to a montage of Benitez’s journey that began as a reporter in Miami to Good Morning America.
He made TV history in 2009 when he filed the first news story to be shot entirely on an iPhone. Joining ABC News in 2013, he quickly made a name for himself reporting on some of the most devastating events in recent history.
Benitez has been ABC’s travel correspondent for the past three years and along the way shared that he’s a self-confirmed “space geek” covering stories on zero gravity and space exploration.
Benitez’s mother and sister also sent a congratulatory video, and Benitez’s husband, TV host Tommy DiDario, showed up on set to congratulate his man on the new gig.
