In a statement announcing his campaign, Mr. Santos did not directly address the controversy that has surrounded him. Instead, he depicted himself as a “fighter” and political outsider who would work outside traditional Republican Party politics.
“We need a fighter who knows the district and can serve the people fearlessly, and independent of local or national party influence,” Mr. Santos said. “Good isn’t good enough, and I’m not shy about doing what it takes to get the job done.”
It’s not sure what job Santos is actually getting “done” since he hasn’t passed any legislation nor does he serve on any committee. Plus, he’s the focus of multiple investigations at the state and federal level, in addition to a House Ethics Committee probe. And his campaign fund-raising seems to be in something of a shambles. The Hill reported over the weekend that in the first three months of this year, Santos’s campaign received $5,333 in individual contributions, but spent $8,353 in refunds to individual donors. Democrat Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) mocked the announcement by “formally endorsing” the experienced liar on Twitter saying no one is a “better representative of the modern day GOP’s stance on honesty and integrity than George Santos.”
I hereby formally endorse George Santos to win the GOP nomination for Congress from his district. Frankly, I can think of no better representative of the modern day GOP’s stance on honesty and integrity than George Santos. https://t.co/dJbHgrswNP
