A Republican lawmaker in Florida has proposed legislation that would make voting by mail much harder to do with narrow exceptions for people who are ill or living overseas. This is called voter suppression. From NBC News affiliate WESH:
Currently, people who want to vote by mail in the state of Florida simply register to vote and request a mail-in ballot.
However, Senate Bill 1752, filed by state Sen. Blaise Ingolia, would change that system with one word: eligibility.
The bill says a qualified absent voter may vote by mail if, on election day and during early in-person voting, the absent voter expects to be:
– Absent from the county of his or her residence
– Unable to appear personally at the early voting site because of illness or physical disability
– A resident or patient of a United States Department of Veterans Affairs medical facility
The bill, if passed, would also cancel all previously requested mail-in ballots for the 2024 election and force voters to request new ballots under the new rules. The point here, obviously, is Republicans continue to press the lie that there’s “overwhelming” fraud in voting by mail. Except, there isn’t.
