EU Agrees To Open Talks For Ukraine To Join

Good news for Ukraine today as European Union leaders have agreed to officially open negotiations for the eastern European country to join the bloc. https://twitter.com/ZelenskyyUa/status/1735353930261959104 From the New York Times:

The move comes at a crucial time for Mr. Zelensky, who is just back from a bruising visit to the United States, where he pleaded for desperately needed money for his war effort, which is being held up by political divisions in Congress.

At the start of the E.U. meeting on Thursday, Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary said he planned to veto an official opening of Ukrainian accession talks, arguing that the country was not ready and that Ukraine’s entry would be bad for the bloc, and for Hungary.

But, in the end, Mr. Orban appears to have abstained from the decision to let the talks begin.

The European Council also agreed to open accession negotiations with Moldova. https://twitter.com/JayinKyiv/status/1735336275761095114
