Ethics Chairman Files Resolution To Expel George Santos

The chairman of the House Ethics Committee, a Republican, has filed a resolution seeking to expel Rep. George Santos (R-NY) from Congress following the release of the committee’s damning new report on the truth-challenged congressman’s fraudulent campaign spending on Thursday. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1725555225325347220 From the New York Times:

The move by Representative Michael Guest of Mississippi, the committee’s chairman, laid the groundwork for a pivotal vote after Thanksgiving that could make Mr. Santos only the sixth representative to be ejected in the chamber’s history.

“The evidence uncovered in the Ethics Committee’s investigative subcommittee investigation is more than sufficient to warrant punishment,” Mr. Guest said in a statement accompanying his five-page resolution. “And the most appropriate punishment is expulsion.”

Mr. Santos, a Republican, has survived two expulsion efforts after a crush of reports in The New York Times and other publications exposed his fabricated life story and federal prosecutors charged him with 23 felonies.

Yesterday’s report – showing he spent campaign funds on Botox, OnlyFans subscriptions, and lavish vacations – has really changed the temperature for Santos’s colleagues since the last vote to expel him failed. Dozens of House members have now announced the ethics report was the last straw for Santos. It’s worth noting that much of Santos’s issues here are financial, and what seems to be a desire to live beyond his means. If expelled, it goes without saying that he will lose his current $174K annual salary as a member of Congress.
