Donald Trump Wants ‘Unlimited’ Strikes Against Jurors In Hush Money Trial

Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account to complain that he thought his defense team should have “unlimited” strikes against potential jurors during the selection process. “I thought STRIKES were supposed to be ‘unlimited’ when we were picking our jury? I was then told we only had 10, not nearly enough when we were purposely given the 2nd Worst Venue in the Country. Don’t worry, we have the First Worst also, as the Witch Hunt continues! ELECTION INTERFERENCE!” But that’s not how it works. If defense lawyers had unlimited preemptory “strikes,” they could delay the trial forever by objecting to every juror. Due to the fact that Trump faces Class E felony charges, under state law, prosecutors and defense are each allowed to strike 10 potential jurors from sitting on the trial. Trump’s attorneys would have had that information for months. Trump’s lawyers and prosecutors can make unlimited requests to Judge Juan Merchan to strike a potential juror for cause, but the judge rules on each of those. https://twitter.com/JoyceWhiteVance/status/1780615256743756020 So far, Trump’s lawyers and the prosecutors have each used six of the ten strikes allotted to them. Seven jurors have been selected thus far. Trump, the first former president to ever face criminal charges, is facing allegations that he falsified documents in order to hide hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. Falsifying official documents is only a misdemeanor in New York state. But when the crime occurs in furtherance of another crime – in this case election interference – the situation elevates to felony status. It’s alleged that Trump paid Daniels to stay quiet about their tryst as he thought it could hurt him in the 2016 election. That would constitute election interference as prosecutors will argue that voters may have wanted to know about the Daniels details prior to election day.
