Approximately 400 noncitizens voted in New Jersey after some 6,600 residents were improperly registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024, due to a software glitch at the Department of Motor Vehicles.
The mistake led to fewer than 400 noncitizen votes being cast — about 0.005% of all votes cast in the state during that period.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) announced today that all 6,600 people are being removed from the voter rolls immediately.

From the New York Times:
All of the people affected had disclosed that they were not citizens when registering for either a driver’s license or ID, but were nonetheless placed on the voter rolls in error.
“These individuals answered ‘no’ when asked on a keypad whether they were a U.S. citizen when applying for drivers’ licenses and identification cards, but through no fault of their own, the system registered them anyway,” Gov. Mikie Sherrill said in a statement.
State officials became aware of the error last week and began an immediate investigation into what had happened.
“I want to underscore how seriously I take this matter,” Ms. Sherrill said.
The governor, in the statement, said that she was “appalled by the reckless failures that allowed this to happen.”
Sherrill, who took office in January, said at a press conference today the error was tied to a software vendor that is being phased out of use in New Jersey. She added that the 400 that voted were registered as Democrats, Republicans and Unaffiliated voters and were scattered across the state.
It’s worth noting that Sherrill, a Democratic governor in a blue state, is immediately taking action once the glitch was discovered. If blue states were “cheating” in the manner that Donald Trump likes to claim, this would have been swept under the rug, no?
Here’s the governor’s full statement:
Last week I learned that a serious software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle System led to the registration of roughly 6,600 people who indicated that they were not U.S. citizens between June 2023 and June 2024, almost three years prior to my taking office. These individuals…
