Lisa Levy, a minister at a New Haven church, is facing shocking animal cruelty charges. Court papers show five dogs adopted by Levy died while in her care.

Hamden officers began investigating Levy in January after her boyfriend brought a dog named Chanco to a veterinarian for treatment of “horrendous” chemical burns, according to a police report. The animal was missing large clumps of hair, and its skin was red, swollen, waxy, and sloughing off.
This was not the first time an animal in Levy’s care suffered mysterious medical issues. Multiple dogs and cats she adopted later developed unexplained injuries or illnesses despite being healthy at the time of adoption, the report said.
According to authorities, one animal was returned to a shelter, four died, four were euthanized, and three others were never accounted for.
Along with Chanco, police said a dog named Zuba died two months after being adopted last summer; Yelenda was returned to a rescue after suffering mysterious wounds; Wanda died last year after experiencing seizures, broken bones, and skin lesions; and Steve died in January 2025 after paralysis, the report said.
Levy reportedly blames her boyfriend, Isaak Cuenco, for the incidents telling investigators Cuenco had anger issues. She added, “If he’s hurting my dogs, it’s a huge deal breaker….If a person did this … it wasn’t me.”
Trinity on the Green Episcopal Church has removed all references to Levy from its website.
