First HIV+ Donor To HIV+ Patient Transplants

Big news for HIV+ patients who are in need of an organ transplant.

Surgeons at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center have successfully performed both liver and kidney transplants from an HIV+ donor to HIV+ patients.

From the Los Angeles Times:

In a first that gives HIV-infected patients yet another chance for long lives, surgeons at Johns Hopkins University Medical Center have transplanted a kidney and a liver from a dead donor who was HIV-positive into two HIV-positive recipients.

The transplant surgeries, which used organs donated by the family of an HIV-positive woman, ended a 25-year stretch in which the organs of HIV-infected people willing to donate them were rejected for use in transplants.

The experimental procedure follows the 2013 enactment of the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act, or HOPE, which repealed the ban on using such organs for transplantation.

“This is an unbelievably exciting day for our hospital and our team, but more importantly for patients living with both HIV and end-stage organ disease,” said Dr. Dorry L. Segev, the Johns Hopkins surgeon who performed the surgeries.

There are over 120,000 patients on the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network’s waiting list. On average, 22 patients die every day while awaiting an available organ.

Why Bernie Sanders Winning Wisconsin Is Not Like Winning New York

This isn’t an “anti-Bernie Sanders” post. It’s a post about math and delegates.

With Bernie Sanders leading in Wisconsin and Hillary Clinton looking to lead by 12 points in New York, the WaPo explores why a win for Bernie and a win for Hillary don’t serve up the same results.

From the Washington Post:

These states are not equivalent. This is not a tie, with Clinton winning one state and Sanders winning another. It is, instead, a clear demonstration of why Bernie Sanders almost certainly won’t be the Democratic nominee.

After all, it comes down to delegates. Wisconsin has 86 delegates; New York has 247. Since the party distributes its delegates proportionally, that means that Sanders’s slight Wisconsin lead would earn him a slightly bigger portion of the state’s small delegate haul. Clinton’s larger New York lead would earn her a larger portion of the state’s large delegate haul.

There are still a lot of states after New York for Sanders to make progress. Many of the delegates remaining though — more than half — are tied up in three large states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey and California. As we noted earlier this month, Clinton is leading in the most recent polling in those three states, too.

The Late Late Show: “Carpool Karaoke” With JLo

James Corden and The Late Late Show have another homerun “Carpool Karaoke” as Jennifer Lopez joins Corden for a ride.

Via Vanity Fair:

This Jennifer Lopez iteration, which aired last night, is a very good one. Lopez—always appealing—is especially relaxed and on point here (highlights include the harmonizing between the two on Lopez’s “Booty,” as well a brief interlude where Lopez shows Corden how to pose for a “J.Lo music video”).

Lopez also knows how to skillfully weave in tidbits to entice the gossip-hungry masses. She reveals to Corden exactly how many men have proposed marriage to her, and how she handled turning down the two she did.

But the centerpiece, for sure, is when, toward the clip’s end, Corden texts Leonardo DiCaprio from Lopez’s phone (“Hey baby, I’m kind of feeling like I need to cut loose any suggestions? Let me know, J.Lo (you know, from the block)” he writes) . . . and, improbably, DiCaprio responds—in delightful fashion.

University Of Virginia Center For Politics: Electoral Projection For Clinton/Trump Matchup

The University of Virginia Center for Politics has compiled it’s first (admittedly early) electoral prediction may based on a probable Hillary Clinton v Donald Trump presidential race.

And the news is good, if you’re Hillary Clinton. This calculation shows she would reach well past the required 270 electoral votes, coming in with 347.

Yielding completely to boldness, or recklessness, we eliminated Toss-ups, and leaned all states to one or the other nominee. Each state’s electoral history, developing demographics, and current polling data guided our choices.

I have to say, looking at this, I’d agree with all of the projections based on how the race looks today. Of course, anything could change the math at any time. But I’d say this is an accurate read.

Donald Trump Tells MSNBC He Believes In Punishing Women For Having Abortion

Just stunning.

Today, Donald Trump said he believes woman should be “punished” for having

In an interview with Chris Matthews set to air later today, GOP front-runner was asked a direct question about abortion:

Matthews: “Do you believe believe in punishment for abortion? Yes or no, as a principle?”

Trump: “The answer is.. yeah, there has to be some form of punishment.”

Matthews: “For the woman?”

Trump: “Yeah, there has to be some form.”

Watch the clear question below:

Trump later backtracked (flip-flopped?) issuing this statement:

This isn’t the first time Trump has flip-flopped on abortion. In 2000, while contemplating a 3rd party presidential run, Trump told Tim Russert that he was “very pro-choice in every respect. Then, in 2012, considering a Republican run at president, he described himself as “pro-life.”

I’m getting dizzy from the flipping and flopping.

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton immediately tweeted out this:

Out Actor Wentworth Miller Responds To Fat-Shaming

Wentworth Miller addresses fat-shaming internet meme with his own struggle against depression

On Monday, Prison Break/Flash star Wentworth Miller responded to an internet meme that was intended to “fat shame” him for gaining some weight a few years ago.

The very personal post is spot on, and courageous.

Here’s the full essay via Facebook:

Today I found myself the subject of an Internet meme. Not for the first time.

This one, however, stands out from the rest.

In 2010, semi-retired from acting, I was keeping a low-profile for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, I was suicidal.

This is a subject I’ve since written about, spoken about, shared about.

But at the time I suffered in silence. As so many do. The extent of my struggle known to very, very few.

Ashamed and in pain, I considered myself damaged goods. And the voices in my head urged me down the path to self-destruction. Not for the first time.

I’ve struggled with depression since childhood. It’s a battle that’s cost me time, opportunities, relationships, and a thousand sleepless nights.

In 2010, at the lowest point in my adult life, I was looking everywhere for relief/comfort/distraction. And I turned to food. It could have been anything. Drugs. Alcohol. Sex. But eating became the one thing I could look forward to. Count on to get me through. There were stretches when the highlight of my week was a favorite meal and a new episode of TOP CHEF. Sometimes that was enough. Had to be.

And I put on weight. Big f–king deal.

One day, out for a hike in Los Angeles with a friend, we crossed paths with a film crew shooting a reality show. Unbeknownst to me, paparazzi were circling. They took my picture, and the photos were published alongside images of me from another time in my career. “Hunk To Chunk.” “Fit To Flab.” Etc.

My mother has one of those “friends” who’s always the first to bring you bad news. They clipped one of these articles from a popular national magazine and mailed it to her. She called me, concerned.

In 2010, fighting for my mental health, it was the last thing I needed.

Long story short, I survived.

So do those pictures.

I’m glad.

Now, when I see that image of me in my red t-shirt, a rare smile on my face, I am reminded of my struggle. My endurance and my perseverance in the face of all kinds of demons. Some within. Some without.

Like a dandelion up through the pavement, I persist.

Anyway. Still. Despite.

The first time I saw this meme pop up in my social media feed, I have to admit, it hurt to breathe. But as with everything in life, I get to assign meaning. And the meaning I assign to this/my image is Strength. Healing. Forgiveness.

Of myself and others.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. Reach out. Text. Send an email. Pick up the phone. Someone cares. They’re waiting to hear from you. Much love. – W.M. #koalas #inneractivist #prisonbroken

Virginia Governor Vetoes Anti-LGBT Legislation

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has vetoed recent legislation that would have legalized anti-LGBT discrimination.

From The Washington Blade:

McAuliffe said in a statement that Senate Bill 41 is “nothing more than an attempt to stigmatize.”

“This legislation is also bad for business and creates roadblocks as we try to build the new Virginia economy,” he said. “Businesses and job creators do not want to locate or do business in states that appear more concerned with demonizing people than with creating a strong business climate.”

“Legislation that immunizes the discriminatory actions of certain people and institutions at the expense of same-sex couples would damage Virginia’s reputation for commonsense, pro-business government,” added McAuliffe. “We need only look at the damage these types of laws are doing in other states to understand the harm this bill could bring to our Commonwealth and its economy.”
