L.A. Times Endorses Hillary Clinton In Advance Of California Primary

Three days before the California Democratic primary, the L.A. Times has endorsed former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

From the L.A. Times editorial board:

Voters should choose the candidate they consider best qualified. This page has endorsed Clinton not because she is more likely to win the nomination but because she is vastly better prepared than Sanders for the presidency.

We say that with full recognition that Sanders has captured the imagination of many Democrats with his articulate attacks on economic inequality and his talk of a political revolution. He can take credit for pressing Clinton to champion the interests of those who have been left behind in this economy.

But Clinton is not only more knowledgeable about domestic and international affairs than Sanders, but also more likely to achieve objectives they have in common. Her speech last week on foreign policy in San Diego — in which she skillfully skewered Trump for his ignorance and recklessness — was a reminder of the breadth of her understanding of international affairs. On domestic policy, her positions on issues such as healthcare and financial regulation are less utopian than what Sanders has proposed but also more realistic.

Some compare Sanders to President Obama, and there are similarities: Like Obama, Sanders opposed the war in Iraq while Clinton as a senator voted to authorize it. Sanders speaks in visionary terms and so did Obama in 2008 when he wrested the nomination from then-Sen. Clinton. But Obama’s vision was of bipartisan cooperation, not a political revolution in which, as Sanders has naively suggested, Republicans would simply capitulate to a Democratic president because a million young people would be massed outside the Capitol.

It’s true that Republicans often rebuffed Obama’s offers of cooperation, but it’s hard to imagine a President Sanders engaging any more successfully with them. Clinton, who as a senator and secretary of State was able to work cooperatively with Republicans, strikes us as being better equipped to reach across the partisan divide, something that will be necessary even if the Democrats regain control of Congress. A Clinton presidency would be more prosaic than a Sanders administration, but it also is likely to be more effective.

Clinton has her liabilities as a candidate, including a penchant for secrecy and self-protection that was reflected in her decision to maintain a private email server as secretary of State and her continued refusal to acknowledge that it ran afoul of State Department policy. In a year in which many voters crave novelty, she is a familiar face. But she has formidable assets that would be especially important in a general-election campaign against Trump: steadiness, seriousness and a commanding grasp of issues about which the blowhard businessman is dangerously ignorant.

Voters in California’s Democratic primary owe a debt of gratitude to Bernie Sanders for a campaign that has emphasized issues that otherwise might have been ignored. But they should cast their votes for Hillary Clinton.

Harvey Fierstein, Cyndi Lauper, and the cast of Broadway’s Tony Award-winning “Best Musical” Kinky Boots shares this upbeat rewrite of the show’s finale – “Just Be” – weighing in on the current rash anti-transgender bathroom laws. #JustPee

In related news, Lauper performs tonight in Raleigh, North Carolina. According to reports, the proceeds from her concert will be donated to the campaign seeking to repeal the state’s HB2 bill; word is her concert rider requires the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts must have a gender-neutral bathroom.

Donald Trump Refers To His “African-American” At Campaign Rally

Boxing Legend Muhammad Ali Passes Away At 74

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali passed away yesterday at the age of 74.

Ali, who had battled advanced Parkinson’s disease since the 1980s, died Friday after being taken to a Phoenix-area hospital due to respiratory issues. He had been placed on life support to regulate his breathing.

The three-time world Heavyweight Boxing champion referred to himself as “The Greatest,” and most sports experts would agree. Incredible skill, natural talent, and a charismatic, bigger-than-life personality earned Ali a legion of fans throughout his career.

A gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympic games, followed by his first heavyweight championships in 1964 (when he knocked out Sonny Liston), were just a few of Ali’s achievements.

Ali retired from boxing in 1981 with a 56-5 record, three of the losses coming in his final four fights. He had 37 knockouts.

After his retirement, he concentrated on philanthropy and social activism.

The White House released a statement from President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama which read, in part:

Muhammad Ali was The Greatest. Period. If you just asked him, he’d tell you. He’d tell you he was the double greatest; that he’d “handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder into jail.”

But what made The Champ the greatest – what truly separated him from everyone else – is that everyone else would tell you pretty much the same thing.

Like everyone else on the planet, Michelle and I mourn his passing. But we’re also grateful to God for how fortunate we are to have known him, if just for a while; for how fortunate we all are that The Greatest chose to grace our time.

[snip]

Muhammad Ali shook up the world. And the world is better for it. We are all better for it. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family, and we pray that the greatest fighter of them all finally rests in peace

New Poll Shows Hillary Clinton In Double-Digit Lead Over Donald Trump

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton with a 12 point lead over Republican Donald Trump.

Among likely voters, 46% said they supported Clinton, while 35% said they supported Trump according to the survey of 1,421 people conducted between May 30 and June 3.

Last month, the same poll indicated Trump had briefly tied the former Secretary of State in support among likely U.S. voters.

Maroon 5 To North Carolina: No Concerts For You

Maroon 5 joins an extremely long list of entertainment acts to cancel dates in North Carolina over the recently passed anti-LGBT legislation HB2. Both Charlotte and Raleigh will lose dates on the band’s schedule.

From the band’s official website:

We have announced that we will be canceling our upcoming shows in Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina because of the recent passage of the HB2 legislation.

This was a difficult decision for us to make as a band. We don’t want to penalize our fans in North Carolina by not performing for them, but in the end it comes down to what we feel is morally right.

Christian Rocker Trey Pearson Talks Coming Out On THE VIEW

A few days ago, I wrote about Christian rocker Trey Pearson of Everyday Sunday who recently made to decision to come out publicly.

Today, Pearson sat down with the ladies of The View to talk on his coming out journey, and the effect it’s had on his life and family.

Text via Towleroad:

• “I grew up in a Christian home and church where I was taught that God hated homosexuality and I could choose to be straight. And I tried for a really long time. And I don’t think I was ever trying to lie to anyone. I was trying to convince myself that I could be something I wasn’t.”

• On his now ex-wife of seven and a half years when he came out to her:“By the time I was able to tell myself and tell her, she just hugged me and cried and told me how proud of me she was for being able to be honest with myself. She’s been my biggest supporter, my biggest advocate.”

• The moment he saw his dad after his story (and he) was finally out: “The day that my story came out, my dad was at work and he read it. And he showed up on my porch while I was curled up on the couch, not sure what people would think, who would be talking about it. And he just knocked on the door – I had no idea he was coming – and he just hugged me for ten minutes and told me how much he loved me.”

• On still being a Christian today: “I feel I’m more in love with Jesus and the scriptures than ever.”

• On the near future: “I’m not dating. I decided to take at least a year to get to know myself as a gay person before starting to get to know who somebody else is in that sort of way,” said Pearson.

Very well-spoken, Trey has a raw honesty in his voice that sounds very freeing for him.

Congrats Trey on living life as who you are!

Joanna Lumley Outs Ab-Fab’s “Patsy” As Transgender

Did Joanna Lumley just “out” her Ab-Fab character “Patsy” as transgender?

Speaking to V Magazine:

“You go back and pick through it, the amount of gay references and ease with which it’s been put into the story, without it being dragged along like a great log of plot. It’s really normal that one of [Edina’s] ex-husbands now lives with his young boyfriend. It’s completely normal that [Edina] wants Saffy [Edina’s long-suffering daughter] to be a lesbian or that Serge [Edina’s long lost son] is gay and living in New York. It’s completely normal that Patsy is transgender.”

If you’re a fan of the series – and who isn’t? – the interview is really worth the read.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie hits theaters July 22nd.
