National Coming Out Day 2017

Come out, come out, wherever you are!

Today, on National Coming Out Day, the LGBT community celebrates the single most powerful action you can take to make LGBT equality a reality. And that is to come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender.

Every step forward we’ve seen in the past several years is directly related to the increased visibility our community has when we proudly step up and out as who we are. People who know someone who is openly gay are more likely to support equal rights for LGBTs.

Coming out inspires friends, family, and allies of the LGBT community to stand up for what is right, even in the face of discrimination, bigotry, and violence.

And on the most personal level, coming out improves our mental health, self-esteem, success, and happiness.

Even if the first step you can take today is to come out to yourself, please know millions support your courage to live life authentically.

One of the most powerful moments I’ve experienced writing The Randy Report was when a regular reader reached out to me to come out on National Coming Out Day. I was honored that they trusted me to share the beginning of their journey.

Here’s hoping a lot of folks begin their own journey today.

Be brave. Be proud. Be you.

Check out Laverne Cox and Wilson Cruz sharing their coming out experiences below, along with social media messages from several Randy Report favorites.

Congressional Democrats Ask For Proof Trump Consulted Generals On Trans Military Ban

Over 100 Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives have issued a letter to Defense Secretary James Mattis asking for proof that Donald Trump consulted the Pentagon before announcing his proposed ban on transgender service members in the U.S. military.

On July 26 of this year, Trump surprised the nation with an out-of-the-blue tweet which sought to ban trans service members.

At the time, he said he’d consulted with “my Generals and military experts.”

Since then, Trump has signed a memo halting any new enlistments by transgender people and eliminating funding for transition-related healthcare costs.

The memo also instructed Mattis to make a decision on transgender soldiers who are already in the military within the next six months.

Several military leaders spoke out against the ban.

To date, no one has identified themselves as having advised Trump in favor of the ban.

Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford, the Pentagon’s top military official, recently told members of the Senate Armed Services Committee he advised the president to allow all qualified troops to serve.

NFL Pushes Back On Trump’s Tweet That NFL “Demanding” Players To Stand During The National Anthem

The NFL on Wednesday slapped back at Donald Trump’s tweet that suggested league Commissioner Roger Goodell is “finally demanding” that players stand up during the national anthem.

The correction came after yesterday’s announcement that Goodell said he would meet with the league’s team owners to discuss a path forward regarding the current national debate about anthem protests.

As part of his announcement, Goodell shared that while the league believes “everyone should stand for the National Anthem,” no demand was placed on players to stand.

Additionally, the league proposed forming an “in-season platform” to allow players to promote social justice efforts.

But today, Donald Trump seemed to give the impression that Goodell and the NFL had announced an official change in terms of kneeling/standing during the national anthem.

Trump tweeted “It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY.”

The NFL pushed back immediately.

“Commentary this morning about the Commissioner’s position on the Anthem is not accurate. As we said yesterday, there will be a discussion of these issues at the owners meeting next week. The NFL is doing the hard work of trying to move from protest to progress, working to bring people together,” the league said in a statement.

Trump Administration Reverses On Support Of Rainbow Flag Raising At Stonewall National Monument

Yet another slap from the Trump administration as the National Park Service has pulled support for today’s raising of the rainbow flag at the Stonewall National Monument in New York City.

In June of last year, President Obama issued a proclamation creating the Stonewall National Monument in New York City’s Greenwich Village. The event today would signify the first time the rainbow flag, the international symbol of the LGBTQ community, would fly on federal land.

The dedication of the monument was no small deal. It was attended by high level politicians and officials including Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, US Representative Carolyn Maloney, DOMA plaintiff Edie Windsor, Mayor Bill de Blasio, Representative Jerrold Nadler, City Councilmember Corey Johnson, National Park Service director Jonathan Jarvis, White House senior advisor Valerie Jarrett, State Senator Brad Hoylman, and Assemblymember Deborah Glick.

Now, however, it seems the National Park Service, under Secretary Ryan Zinke’s Department of the Interior, took notice of the pre-event publicity and has declared that the flagpole is not on federal land and therefore not the responsibility of the Park Service.

This is some petty, petty stuff, folks. Tax dollars were spent researching the location and legality of a flag pole.

From Andy Hamm of Gay City News:

The National Park Service’s Barbara Applebaum, who arranged the permit for the event, dropped out as a speaker at the ceremony — her office citing a schedule conflict — and organizers of the event said in a release that the Park Service dropped its sponsorship of the event for which it had issued the permit to veteran gay activist Michael Petrelis.

Ann Northrop, co-host of Gay USA, who will preside over the dedication, said, “This is an unbelievably petty, sleazy, transparent bit of cruelty by the Trump administration. Evidently, we are so filthy to them and their right-wing supporters that they can’t even be associated with a few yards of rainbow fabric.”

In abrupt turnabout, Park Service pulls out of Stonewall Monument ceremony, saying it’s not responsible for flagpole

Veteran gay activist Ken Kidd, one of the main organizers of the event, said, “This is emblematic of what’s happening in the country right now to LGBTQ Americans citizens. We’re being told at every turn — including Trump’s first decision to appoint Pence — that actions will be taken to make us second-class citizens again. The very idea that taxpayer dollars were spent researching a flagpole on a national monument when there are so many other things at stake in the country is an outrage. Some employee of the Park Service or Interior read that Newsweek preview article on this because Donald Trump’s name was mentioned by me. They are so thin-skinned and so bigoted that they were going to spite us and not let that Rainbow Flag fly on federal property.”

Mindy Anderson, chief of communications for National Parks of New York Harbor, told Hamm that the Park Service only recently learned that “the flagpole is not on federal property.”

“In good faith, because of working with the community, we raised the Rainbow Flag. So with our strong partnership with NYC Parks, we gifted the flag to them so they could continue to fly it,” Anderson added.

The Trump administration is so ardent in distancing itself from the event, the page for the monument hasn’t been updated since September 7.

Additionally, the National Park Services Facebook page, which is updated on a daily basis, does not list today’s event.

In any case, today’s event will still go on. Kidd told Gay City News, “What we had planned with great people from the National Park Service was a lovely, small-town all-American celebration of our rightful place as citizens and of Stonewall’s rightful place in the struggle for equality in the USA. Our plans are to continue with that celebration.”

More about today’s event via press release:

The event will be emceed by Gay USA television co-host Ann Northrop. Performers will include Telly Leung, who plays the title role in Disney’s “Aladdin on Broadway” and Cantor Steve Zeidenberg of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah. Speakers will be Leslie Cagan, co-organizer of the 1987 March on Washington for LGBT Rights, Kiara St. James, Executive Director of New York Transgender Advocacy Group, and LGBT and AIDS activist Michael Petrelis, who spearheaded this initiative.

“It is a victory for our Community to have these symbolic colors flying majestically over our Stonewall, designated as a National Monument by President Obama, even as our LGBTQ brothers and sisters are under attack by the current regime in power,” said Petrelis.

October 11 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the historic 1987 March on Washington for Lesbian & Gay Rights–when the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt was unfurled on the National Mall. The date also marks the annual National Coming Out Day, inviting the LGBTQ community to live their lives openly.

Gay Couple Produce Adorable Video To Roxette’s “Good Karma”

Totally adorable gay couple Jakub and Dawid recently married in Portugal and then honeymooned in Scandinavia where they shot and produced this officially sanctioned music video for Roxette’s “Good Karma.”

The couple had previously produced a video for Roxette’s “Some Other Summer” which went viral racking up over 579K views on YouTube.

Donald Trump Challenges Secretary Of State To IQ Test, White House Backtracks On “Joke”

Earlier today, Donald Trump Trump took a shot at Secretary of State Rex Tillerson over his reportedly calling the president a “moron.”

“I think it’s fake news,” Trump said, “but if he did that, I guess we’ll have to compare IQ tests. And I can tell you who is going to win.”

Later, during a White House press briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared it was a joke: “He made a joke. Maybe you guys should get a sense of humor and try it sometime.”

Trump has had a long-standing obsession with the idea of “IQ” going back to the campaign trail in 2015.

CNN put together this montage of stump speeches where Trump invoked his superior intellect several times.

President & Mrs. Obama Respond To Weinstein Sex Scandal

President Obama and Mrs. Obama have issued the following statement regarding the recent reports about Harvey Weinstein:

“Michelle and I have been disgusted by the recent reports about Harvey Weinstein. Any man who demeans and degrades women in such fashion needs to be condemned and held accountable, regardless of wealth or status. We should celebrate the courage of women who have come forward to tell these painful stories. And we all need to build a culture – including by empowering our girls and teaching our boys decency and respect – so we can make such behavior less prevalent in the future.”

Survey: Trump Has Lost Support In Every State Since Inauguration

Bad news for Donald Trump in the latest Morning Consult survey which shows Trump’s approval rating has failed to improve in a single state since Inauguration Day. And that includes those states he won easily last November

Based on 472,032 interviews of registered voters across each state and Washington, D.C., over 8 months from January 20 to September 26, and the survey provides insight into how Trump’s approval has changed each month since Inauguration Day.

That’s a very large survey sample, not just a few thousand.

Just a few samples from the survey:

In states where Trump won by the thinnest of margins, his approval has dropped significantly. This should really concern Team Trump as there will be no reelection if this trend continues:

• Michigan: -22% net percentage point change
• Wisconsin: -18%
• Pennsylvania: -16%
• North Carolina: -18%
• Arizona: -26%

Where Trump’s approval has dropped most since January:

• Illinois: -30 net percentage point change
• New York: -30%
• District of Columbia: -29%

Where Trump is most popular:

• Wyoming: +26% net approval
• West Virginia: +24%
• Alabama: +23%

Where Trump is least popular:

• District of Columbia: -60% net approval
• Hawaii: -33%
• Massachusetts: -31%

Addressing the ongoing controversy of NFL players taking a knee during the national anthem, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has penned a letter to team owners saying, “We believe that everyone should stand for the National Anthem.”

Does this mean there will be a rule change in the NFL? Will the players association go along?

We’ll see.
