Australia: Check Out This Cheeky Marriage Proposal

Shortly after Australia’s Chief Statistician revealed that 62% of Aussies approve of same-sex marriage, Melbourne-based Mark Keevers decided to surprise his boyfriend Andrew with a cheeky marriage proposal.

Andrew competes with the Melbourne Surge water polo team. After the Surge’s latest match, Mark met Andrew poolside and placed a rainbow flag towel around his shoulders.

With their favorite song, Jess Glynne’s ‘Hold My Hand’, playing in the background Mark dropped to one knee and directed Mark’s attention to his teammates whose swimsuited bums spelled out “Marry me?”

“He is just everything” Mark told The Star Observer. “He has this passion for everything he does. We have the same values, and want the same things, it’s perfect.

Mark also expressed his gratitude to his countrymen for the all-important “Yes” vote from the recent mail-in survey.

“The ‘Yes’ result is completely validating,” he said. “To see that people in my own country see me as legitimate and the same.”

Ellen Makes A Pitch For The Majestic Pachyderm After Trump Reverses Course On Elephant Trophies

In light of the Trump administration reversing course on an Obama era ban that kept hunters from bringing elephant trophies from the African countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia back into the Untied States, Ellen DeGeneres used her opening monologue yesterday to highlight and celebrate the incredible qualities of elephants.

“I love elephants. And if you take the time to learn about elephants, you would love elephants too.

“Elephants show compassion, sympathy, social intelligence, self-awareness. They’re excellent at learning abilities…all the things I have yet to see in this president.”

I consider myself a southern gentleman most of the time, and I rarely use vulgar language. But when I heard about the Trump administration’s decision, my reaction was to take to Facebook and post, “I’m sorry, but f*ck this shit.”

You’ll notice I did at least begin with an “I’m sorry.”

Elephants are, as Ellen correctly points out, majestic creatures. All Trump’s decision will do is encourage more American hunters to kill more elephants.

U.S. Senators Get Into Shouting Match Over Tax Cuts For The Wealthy

Sen. Orrin Hatch

This was really quite the exchange yesterday between Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah.

During a Senate Finance Committee hearing last night, Brown accused Republicans of pushing a tax plan that provides a tax cut that’s “not really for the middle class, it’s for the rich.”

Brown clearly seems to have touched a nerve with the Republican.

Via The Hill:

Hatch, the committee chairman, quickly fired back at Brown, saying that he isn’t advocating for the rich but comes “from the poor people.”

“I’ve been here working my whole stinking career for people who don’t have a chance,” Hatch said. “And I really resent anybody who says I’m just doing this for the rich. Give me a break.”

“I think you guys just overplay that all the time and it gets old, frankly you ought to quit,” he continued. “I get kind of sick and tired of it. … It’s a nice political play, but it’s not true.”

Brown quickly responded, saying that he gets “sick and tired of the richest people in this country getting richer and richer.”

The two senators loudly talked over each other as they tried to regain control of the floor.

“Listen, I’ve honored you by allowing you to spout off here but what you said was not right, that’s all I’m saying,” Hatch said. “I come from the lower-middle class originally, we didn’t have anything. So don’t spew that stuff on me, I get real tired of that crap.”

Not surprisingly, the plan was advanced out of the committee by a party line vote of 14-12.

Quote Of The Day: Sen. Bob Menendez

Sen. Bob Menendez

Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey had reason to celebrate yesterday as the two and a half month long corruption trial against him ended in a mistrial as jurors found themselves deadlocked and unable to come to a unanimous decision.

Speaking to reporters, Menendez referenced his political foes who he says were “digging” his “political grave” so they could take over his senate seat.

“To those who were digging my political grave so they could jump into my seat, I know who you are and I won’t forget you,” the Democratic senator said.

Donald Trump, Of All People, Criticizes Al Franken On Sexual Misconduct

Just hours after the story broke that Sen. Al Franken had forcibly kissed a radio host during a USO skit 11 years ago, Donald Trump weighed in on the issue tweeting, “The Al Frankenstien picture is really bad, speaks a thousand words. Where do his hands go in pictures 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 while she sleeps? …..”

Now, I’m not sure this is the smoothest move for a man who has not only been silent on Alabama Republican Roy Moore’s similar predicament, but also has his own fair share of sexual impropriety leveled at him in addition to a certain video tape from Access Hollywood.

This is the kind of moment you put your head down and focus on eating your salad and hope no one notices you’re in the room.

Predictably, the Twitterverse was happy to chime in:

Ohio: “Family Values” Lawmaker Resigns After “Inappropriate Conduct” With Another Man

Ohio State Rep. Wes Goodman (R-Cardington), who consistently touted his faith and conservative values, has abruptly resigned after being confronted with evidence of inappropriate conduct with another man inside his office.

From the Columbus Dispatch:

House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, R-Clarksville, met Tuesday afternoon with the Cardington Republican soon after the speaker became aware of an incident from weeks ago in the lawmaker’s office that, sources said, involved a male in a consensual situation.

No harassment complaint, sexual or otherwise, was filed against Goodman. But someone, reportedly not a staffer, who knew of or witnessed the incident informed House Chief of Staff Mike Dittoe of the situation early Tuesday afternoon.

“I was alerted to details yesterday afternoon regarding his involvement in inappropriate behavior related to his state office,” Rosenberger said in a statement on Wednesday. “I met with him later in the day where he acknowledged and confirmed the allegations. It became clear that his resignation was the most appropriate course of action for him, his family, the constituents of the 87th House District and this institution.”

The speaker’s office is not releasing additional details of the conduct, though Brad Miller, spokesman for Rosenberger, said it did not involve Statehouse staffers or other legislative members. Rumors about Goodman’s questionable conduct, including his use of social media, have been swirling at the Statehouse in the past few weeks and include stories dating back years to when he worked in Washington. His Facebook account was taken offline.

Rosenberger and Goodman agreed, Miller said, “that it was activity unbecoming of a state representative.”

Goodman, 33, who says on his campaign web site that “healthy, vibrant, thriving, values-driven families are the source of Ohio’s proud history,” expressed regret for his actions.

“We all bring our own struggles and our own trials into public life. That has been true for me, and I sincerely regret that my actions and choices have kept me from serving my constituents and our state in a way that reflects the best ideals of public service,” he said in a statement. “For those whom I have let down, I’m sorry. As I move onto the next chapter of my life, I sincerely ask for privacy for myself, my family, and my friends.”

Goodman’s entire career in politics has been predicated on his uber-conservative positions on “natural marriage” and “pro-family” issues.

Sen. Al Franken Apologizes For Groping/Kissing Incident

A female radio host claims Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota made a lewd gesture while she was sleeping aboard a military plane on her way home from a USO tour in 2006 before he was elected to the U.S. Senate.

She also says he forcibly kissed her when they were performing together for troops overseas.

From ABC News:

“I felt disgusting and violated,” Leeann Tweeden wrote on KABC’s website.

Tweeden, who is a radio news anchor based in Los Angeles, wrote on KABC’s website this morning about what she says was her experience.

She claims that in 2006 Franken insisted on kissing her as part of a rehearsal for an act. He later groped her while she was asleep on a plane, she also claimed. Franken was elected senator in 2008.

Franken issued this apology via Facebook:

The first thing I want to do is apologize: to Leeann, to everyone else who was part of that tour, to everyone who has worked for me, to everyone I represent, and to everyone who counts on me to be an ally and supporter and champion of women. There’s more I want to say, but the first and most important thing—and if it’s the only thing you care to hear, that’s fine—is: I’m sorry.

I respect women. I don’t respect men who don’t. And the fact that my own actions have given people a good reason to doubt that makes me feel ashamed.

But I want to say something else, too. Over the last few months, all of us—including and especially men who respect women—have been forced to take a good, hard look at our own actions and think (perhaps, shamefully, for the first time) about how those actions have affected women.

For instance, that picture. I don’t know what was in my head when I took that picture, and it doesn’t matter. There’s no excuse. I look at it now and I feel disgusted with myself. It isn’t funny. It’s completely inappropriate. It’s obvious how Leeann would feel violated by that picture. And, what’s more, I can see how millions of other women would feel violated by it—women who have had similar experiences in their own lives, women who fear having those experiences, women who look up to me, women who have counted on me.

Coming from the world of comedy, I’ve told and written a lot of jokes that I once thought were funny but later came to realize were just plain offensive. But the intentions behind my actions aren’t the point at all. It’s the impact these jokes had on others that matters. And I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to come to terms with that.

While I don’t remember the rehearsal for the skit as Leeann does, I understand why we need to listen to and believe women’s experiences.

I am asking that an ethics investigation be undertaken, and I will gladly cooperate.

And the truth is, what people think of me in light of this is far less important than what people think of women who continue to come forward to tell their stories. They deserve to be heard, and believed. And they deserve to know that I am their ally and supporter. I have let them down and am committed to making it up to them.

Tweeden says she accepts Franken’s apology and isn’t asking for him to step down as Senator:

There are reports that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will ask for an ethics investigation which Franken has already agreed to cooperate with.

It’s interesting that Franken will be investigated for pretending to grope a woman while asleep, but Donald Trump has over a dozen accusers about misconduct and … nothing.

Texas Sheriff Threatens Disorderly Conduct Charges For Anti-Trump Sticker

A Texas sheriff is threatening charges of disorderly conduct for the driver of a truck bearing an anti-Trump sticker.

From the Houston Chronicle:

Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls on Wednesday created a social media firestorm with a Facebook post threatening to bring disorderly conduct charges against the driver of a truck displaying a profane anti-Trump message on its rear window.

Nehls told the Houston Chronicle that he had received calls, texts and emails in recent days from people who took offense at the language in bold, white lettering: “F— TRUMP AND F— YOU FOR VOTING FOR HIM.”

The sheriff, a Republican who is weighing a bid for Congress shared a photo on his official Facebook page in hopes that it would help to identify the truck owner. The license plate is not visible in the image.

Turns out, a woman who identified herself as the driver said she used to work for Nehls in the county jail.

Karen Fonseca said the truck belongs to her husband but that she often drives it. They had the sticker made and added it to the window after the billionaire real estate magnate and reality TV star was sworn into office.

The sticker has attracted attention many times before, Fonseca said. People shake their head. They take photos of it. Officers have pulled her over but failed to find a reason for writing a ticket.
Now the sheriff is taking it on, but Fonseca did not plan to contact him.

“It’s not to cause hate or animosity,” said Fonseca, 46. “It’s just our freedom of speech and we’re exercising it.”

Texas state law describes disorderly conduct as intentionally using “abusive, indecent, profane, or vulgar language in a public place, and the language by its very utterance tends to incite an immediate breach of peace.”

The ACLU of Texas has already expressed an opinion on the subject:
