Trump’s Voter Profiling Firm “Harvested” Private Info From 50 Million Facebook Users Without Permission

Donald Trump

Donald Trump’s voter-profiling company Cambridge Analytica “harvested” the private information of over 50 million Facebook users without permission in hopes of influencing voter behavior.

From The New York Times:

The firm had secured a $15 million investment from Robert Mercer, the wealthy Republican donor, and wooed his political adviser, Stephen K. Bannon, with the promise of tools that could identify the personalities of American voters and influence their behavior. But it did not have the data to make its new products work.

So the firm harvested private information from the Facebook profiles of more than 50 million users without their permission, according to former Cambridge employees, associates and documents, making it one of the largest data leaks in the social network’s history.

The breach allowed the company to exploit the private social media activity of a huge swath of the American electorate, developing techniques that underpinned its work on President Trump’s campaign in 2016.

An examination by The New York Times and The Observer of London reveals how Cambridge Analytica’s drive to bring to market a potentially powerful new weapon put the firm — and wealthy conservative investors seeking to reshape politics — under scrutiny from investigators and lawmakers on both sides of the Atlantic.

Christopher Wylie, who helped found Cambridge and worked there until late 2014, said of its leaders: “Rules don’t matter for them. For them, this is a war, and it’s all fair.”

“They want to fight a culture war in America,” he added. “Cambridge Analytica was supposed to be the arsenal of weapons to fight that culture war.”

According to The Times, Cambridge paid a third party to lie to Facebook in order to acquire the data saying the information was to be used for “academic purposes.”

After knowing about the data breach for months, Facebook said last night it is suspending the account of Cambridge Analytica. I’m guessing the Times‘ article applied some pressure, no?

The article goes on to say that Cambridge still has most or all of the private information.

Trump Gloats Over Firing Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe

With absolutely no attempt to hide his involvement, Donald Trump openly gloated about firing former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe on Twitter this morning.

“Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI,” wrote Trump. “A great day for Democracy. Sanctimonious James Comey was his boss and made McCabe look like a choirboy. He knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!”

Folks with a LOT of legal experience didn’t think this was such a good idea…

After 22 Years, Former FBI Deputy Director Fired 2 Days Shy Of His Retirement

Andrew McCabe

This is some stone-cold shit.

After 22 years service with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was fired tonight by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, less than two days shy of his retirement.

From CNN:

McCabe had more recently been regularly taunted by President Donald Trump and besieged by accusations that he had misled internal investigators at the Justice Department.

In a blistering statement Friday night, McCabe said his firing is part of a larger effort to discredit the FBI and the special counsel’s investigation.

“This attack on my credibility is one part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally,” McCabe said. “It is part of this Administration’s ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation, which continue to this day. Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the Special Counsel’s work.”

McCabe had been expected to retire this Sunday, on his 50th birthday, when he would have become eligible to receive early retirement benefits.

But Friday’s termination could place a portion of his anticipated pension, earned after more than two decades of service, in significant jeopardy.

Donald Trump, who clearly ordered the firing, weighed in via Twitter:

Here’s McCabe’s statement tonight:

Report: Another Man Diagnosed With HIV While Taking PrEP

Health officials in Washington State report a local man has been diagnosed with HIV while taking PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis).

The Seattle & King County’s Public Health Department reports the unnamed man was infected with a rare strain of HIV resistant to the medications in Truvada, the drug’s commercial name.

No details are available on whether he took the medication regularly.

If taken correctly, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV by up to 99%.

From OutBreakNewsToday:

Truvada as HIV PrEP is very effective if taken consistently. It reduces the risk of acquiring HIV through sex by over 90%, and perhaps by over 95%. It is also more than 70% effective in preventing HIV infections transmitted through sharing injection equipment. So while it is very effective, like many drugs, it is not 100% effective.

There have been very few reports of HIV infections while taking PrEP.

An Australian man participating in a PrEP clinical trial became infected in 2017 with a drug-resistant strain of HIV.

Also last year, a Dutch man was diagnosed with HIV but doctors there speculate that his “remarkably high” number of sex partners might have been a factor in his infection.

The Centers for Disease Control recommended in 2015 that sexually active gay and bisexual men, or about one in four, be on PrEP.

“Love, Simon” Actor Joey Pollari Shares His Coming Out Story

In the new groundbreaking romantic comedy Love, Simon, actor Joey Pollari plays a potential love interest for the title character.

Although the handsome actor has been out to friends & family since 18, the former Disney star hasn’t publicly addressed the issue until now. “I think all my friends and family knew on some level. I think maybe two people were shocked.”

Pollari recently told The Advocate that his character’s coming out experience “was similar to mine.”

“The only part that was difficult was me coming out to myself. And I think that is the most difficult coming-out.

“A lot of the trouble was self-shame. I do believe a system of power, of patriarchy, of masculinity did impact me. The greatest difficulty I found was that it didn’t match my idea of myself. It seemed incongruent with the future I imagined for myself, the identity I had struck up with others. The interplay between me and women, me and men, now suddenly seemed entirely different. That just didn’t seem fair or right.”

Love, Simon is the first mainstream film to be backed by a major studio that features a gay teen as the central character.

The movie opens today nationwide. Make sure you get out there and support 🙂

Video: How The Queens Voted On “RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars” Finale

The eliminated queens of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3

I’m seeing all these protests on social media denouncing last night’s winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3.

(Spoiler alert)

Here’s how it went down:

The four finalists each had an interview with the eliminated queens. Once the interviews were completed, the jury cast their votes for the two queens they wanted to sing for lip-sync for the title.

Apparently, fans saw Shangela as the “obvious” winner but in the end it was Trixie Mattel who would triumph.

I’m not an expert on the art of drag so I’m not your guy to say if Trixie was or wasn’t the fiercest.

But people are upset.

During the show, the viewers weren’t allowed to see how the eliminated queens chose the two finalists who would move to the final lip-sync, but here’s the deleted scene that shows how they actually voted.

Fan favorite Shangela got very little support.

Watch how the queens voted below.

Mike Pence Bans Media From Breakfast Meeting With Openly Gay Irish Prime Minister

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar with Vice President Mike Pence and
Second Lady Karen Pence

After Ireland’s first openly gay leader said he would bring up LGBTQ rights with Vice President Mike Pence at a breakfast meeting, Pence barred media from attending the meeting.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar told the press before the meeting that he would be bringing up the issue of LGBTQ rights to the veep during the annual St Patrick’s Day meeting at the U.S. Naval Observatory where Pence and his wife Karen reside.

Ahead of the event, Pence stipulated that the media were only allowed to capture the arrival of the pair outside Pence’s residence.

Pence’s anti-LGBTQ policies and positions are well known from opposing open service in the military and same-sex marriage to supporting so-called “ex-gay” therapy.

Mr Varadkar expressed disappointment at the media ban but added, “It allows us maybe to have a frank conversation that’s easier to have without the media present.”
