Survivor premiere tonight!

The cast of Survivor 2011

Love the reality show “Survivor”! And it starts tonight 8pm/7central on CBS.

Results from Ipsos/Reuters poll – Obama leads GOP challengers

From an Ipsos poll conducted for Reuters from September 8th through 12th, 2011.  1,134 adults aged 18 and older across the United States was interviewed by Ipsos via live telephone interviewing on landlines and cell phones.

Key findings include:

President Obama received a small bump up in approval ratings after his recent jobs speech. His approval rating climbed two points to 47% approve after hitting 45% in August.

The closest competitor President Obama currently has is Mitt Romney, currently at a 6 point deficit among registered voters (49% Obama, 43% Romney). The other Republican challengers continue to have larger margins to surmount (all among registered voters):

  • Ron Paul is down 7 points (49 Obama to 42 Paul)
  • Rick Perry is down 8 points (50 Obama to 42 Perry)
  • Huntsman is down 14 points (51 Obama to 37 Huntsman)
  • Michelle Bachmann is down 18 points (54 Obama to 36 Bachmann)

Poll: 53% of Americans support gay marriage

A new poll from the Associated Press shows a shift in support for marriage equality across the country.

Though a narrow majority opposed equality in 2009, now, in 2011, a majority of Americans want legal marriage rights for same-sex couples!

Reports the AP:  53% of the 1,000 adults surveyed believe the government should give legal recognition to marriages between couples of the same sex, about the same as last year, according to the nationwide telephone poll by The Associated Press and the National Constitution Center. 44% were opposed.

People are similarly conflicted over what, if anything, the government should do about the issue.

Support for legal recognition of same-sex marriage has shifted in recent years, from a narrow majority opposed in 2009 to narrow majority support now. Some of the shift stems from a generational divide, with the new poll showing a majority of Americans under age 65 in favor of legal recognition for same-sex marriages, and a majority of seniors opposed.

Moreover, slightly more Americans (57%) believe same-sex couples should at least receive the benefits entitled to heterosexual unions, even if marriage isn’t the word they prefer.

5 year sentence given for beating of trans woman in Baltimore

Teonna Monae Brown, 19, was charged with the April 18 Baltimore McDonald’s beating of transgender woman Chrissy Lee Polis, 22, and will now serve the sentence of five years in prison for the crime.

The incident attracted national attention after the video was posted on YouTube by a McDonald’s employee who recorded the incident but did nothing to stop the crime.

You can see the very disturbing video of the attack here. Be warned though – it’s very disturbing.

In the recorded video, the teen, along with another 14-year-old female, is seen beating the transgender woman in the body and head, dragging her across the restaurant after she used the women’s restroom.

“I continue to suffer seizures, bouts of crying, mental anguish and anxiety,” Polis said in a statement. “I fear being alone. I have flashbacks about the attacks. I have twice now been admitted to a crisis center, and I am having extreme mental difficulty.”

Brown’s sentence produced 10 years for each of the charges standing against her, but Baltimore County Circuit Court Judge John Turnbull III suspended five years on both counts, allowing Brown to serve the remaining 5 year sentence concurrently. Brown will also stand on a three-year probation after her release from prison.

The 14-year-old, whose name has not been released, has admitted responsibility to the same charge of hate crime and first degree assault. Her sentence was undisclosed, but she was sent to a juvenile facility for an unknown period of time.

Olivia to open relaunch of Star City Casino in OZ

Olivia Newton-John quietly slipped into Sydney yesterday to serve as the secret ribbon cutter for tonight’s relaunch of Star City following a landmark $1 billion redevelopment.

The Australian showbiz icon was chosen from a long list of international names after main attraction Lionel Richie withdrew from the glamorous gala, which will officially rebrand the casino as The Star.

It is believed that Olivia arrived on one of the two private jets that have been bought by the Pyrmont gaming mecca to ferry in high-rolling punters from around the world.

“As much as what’s happening with the refurb seems very Las Vegas, it’s still very Sydney and very Australian – she (Newton-John) was a fitting choice,” said an insider.

Olivia will appear at the reopening with Larry Mullin, the CEO of Echo Entertainment Group, which owns The Star and instigated the facelift – the biggest in Sydney’s history. Guests will board a yacht at Campbells Cove in Circular Quay and sail over to see The Star’s grand new harbourfront entrance.

After a short cocktail soiree outside, the crowd of about 250 will head up the mountainous marble staircase for a sit-down dinner at either Balla or BLACK By Ezard , two of the venue’s new waterfront restaurants.

All part of a pitch by Star City – next week to be officially relaunched as The Star – to become the new dominant force in the $60 billion Australian high-rollers casino scene, The Star is putting blackjack and baccarat tables on the penthouse floor of its opulent new Darling Hotel.

In total, The Star is spending $160 million just on winning over high-rollers. By next year, there will be private gaming facilities on the top floor of its newly renovated main building and two private aircraft to bring those known in the industry as “whales” to Sydney from Asia. But The Star does not just want the high-rollers. It has embarked on a $1 billion spending spree to bring a touch of Vegas to Sydney that by 2013 will include a 3000-seat events centre to host top international music acts.

The new casino will employ 1000 hospitality staff, while 1500 construction workers were employed over the past three years on revamping the casino. It is predicted the newly-expanded casino will contribute more than $250 million a year in state taxes by mid-2012.

Good samaritans save man from burning car

The university math students heard the crash, saw the smoke and knew they had to act quickly.

A motorcyclist had just collided with a car and was pinned beneath the flaming, twisted metal wreckage. 

Disregarding their own safety, they rushed to the street and lined up with more than half dozen others on one side of the car. Within moments, they managed to lift the roughly 4,000-pound car just high enough for one rescuer to pull Brandon Wright to safety.

“The danger? I didn’t think about it for a minute,” said James Odei, 35, a doctoral candidate from Ghana who is studying statistics. “All I wanted to do was grab that car and raise it.”

For their actions, the rescuers are being called “heroes” and “angels” — their few minutes of heroics was captured on video and has gone viral on the Internet.

The man they saved — the 21-year-old Utah State University student — is grateful. “I’m just very thankful for everyone that helped me out,” Wright told The Associated Press by telephone from his hospital bed. “They saved my life.”

We don’t hear enough about selfless acts like this.  While I’m sad to hear of the misfortune, it’s heartening to know there are still selfless people who rush in to help.
