Broadway’s Hunter Foster on Chick-Fil-A and marriage equality

From Broadway’s Hunter Foster on Facebook: “I just posted this on an anti-gay marriage/pro Chick-Fil-A blog and I wanted to share.”

I live in New York City. The majority of my friends, neighbors and colleagues are gay. My wife’s maid of honor at our wedding is gay. One of my best friends in the world is gay. We have traveled to Europe with gay friends, attended gay weddings and seen our gay friends adopt babies, buy houses and now, thankfully, get legally married in the state of New York. We know gay couples who have been together in long term loving relationships of thirty years or more and seen the joy of gay parents with their newly adopted children.

Unfortunately, I have also seen how the argument against gay marriage affects my friends. How it makes them feel like second class citizens. It may seem trivial to those who can get married, but what if you were told you were not allowed to stand up in front of your friends and family and commit your life legally to the love of of your life. How would that make you feel? Cathays comments are hurtful because he reiterates this. You can read between the lines in his comments: same sex relationships are “inferior” to heterosexual relationships.

I believe marriage is more than just the statement: one man/one woman. I believe it’s about love, its about two people who want to spend the rest of their lives together. Who want to create a family. Who want to build a home and a life together. Why does that have to be one man/one woman? Great families are born out of love regardless if it’s gay or straight

And I know this has a lot to do with religious beliefs. But, why would God want to deny love to exist in the world? Why would He want to deny certain people the same opportunity for happiness as everyone else? I believe people need to search their own hearts and find the truth about where this prejudice comes from, and maybe see the world as it truly is from a human point of view and not just a world influenced by scripture.

Dan Cathy believes in the “biblical definition of the family”

Dan Cathy of Chick-Fil-A believes in the “biblical definition of the family unit.”

So here we go on the “biblical definition of the family unit”:

  • Marriages must be in the same faith
  • Not only should a wife be subordinate (Ephisians 5:22), but she must prove her virginity lest she be stoned (Deuteronomy 22:20-21)
  • Marriages should be arranged
  • If a woman’s husband dies without having had a son, she must marry his brother and have intercourse with him until they have a son (Mark 12:18-27)
  • Many of the “men of god” were not only married but had at least one concubine (Abraham, Caleb, Solomon)
  • God frequently blessed polygamists (Esau, Jacob, Gideon, David, Solomon, Behshazzarr)

So – Chick-Fil-A lovers – go get some chicken sandwiches, stone your non-virgin wives, get a concubine and get right with the Bible!

Remember how Chick-Fil-A says this brouhaha is about freedom of speech?

Adam Smith, who lives in Arizona, filmed himself addressing a drive-thru employee of a Chick-Fil-A to protest the company’s anti-gay donations.

His clip went viral on anti-gay sites, prompting internet sleuths to identify the man and track down his biotech employer who fired their CFO on the spot.

From the company’s press release:

“Vante regrets the unfortunate events that transpired yesterday in Tucson between our former CFO/Treasurer Adam Smith and an employee at Chick-fil-A. Effective immediately, Mr. Smith is no longer an employee of our company. The actions of Mr. Smith do not reflect our corporate values in any manner. Vante is an equal opportunity company with a diverse workforce, which holds diverse opinions. We respect the right of our employees and all Americans to hold and express their personal opinions, however, we also expect our company officers to behave in a manner commensurate with their position and in a respectful fashion that conveys these values of civility with others. We hope that the general population does not hold Mr. Smith’s actions against Vante and its employees.

A blogger for the Tucson Citizen denounced the firing:

“We all know that the Chick-Fil-A appreciation day is all about supporting “the first amendment” and “free speech”. As long as the speech is anti-gay, of course.  Otherwise it’s free speech for me but not for thee, at least at the Tucson company Vante. Adam Smith, Chief Financial Officer at Vante, on his own personal time and with no connection to his employer, Vante, took it upon himself to video his protest of Chick-Fil-A as “hateful” and post the video to YouTube.”

“Mr. Smith’s actions were described as “bullying”, but I confess that I can’t find any bullying in his protest. What you think may depend upon the side you are on, but there is no doubt what side Vante is on.  That “free speech” is such a tricky thing, it seems.”
