Lady Gaga’s “Fame the fragrance” trailer

So, while I admire the artist that is Lady Gaga (most of the time) this trailer has me a little perplexed.

I think of a fragrance as something you wear that someone physically close to you can enjoy. Something that’s romantic.

This video, produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Steven Klein, who helmed Gaga’s “Alejandro” video, features the superstar emerging from a black liquid bath and eventually ruling over an army of men.

Thoughts anyone? Am I just not getting it?

Tony Perkins blames Southern Poverty Law Center for FRC shooting

Now, let me get this straight – last year, after Sarah Palin, the former half-term governor of Alaska, put cross-hairs on Democratic politicians in a graphic that included Rep. Gabby Giffords, and a connection to the Giffords shooting was discussed in the media, the right wing nuts screamed how she COULD NOT be in any way be involved. Am I remembering this right?

But now, a nut with a gun heads over to FRC and shoots someone, and now it’s the Southern Poverty Law Center’s fault? The SPLC who did not send out a memo or graphic with cross-hairs suggesting anyone go shoot anyone.

Get a grip and stop politicizing a terrible incident. The man who was the shooter at FRC was deranged and wrong. Period. But that doesn’t make SPLC responsible just because the SPLC has called FRC on their own hate speech.

Give me a break. As everyone said last year during the terrible Gabby Giffords shooting, it’s despicable to politicize such a horrible incident.

Stop it Tony Perkins. Stop right now.

Shooter at Family Research Council identified

The shooter at the Family Research Council headquarters has been identified as Flord Corkins, 28, of Herndon, Virginia.

From Talking Points Memo:

As of late Wednesday afternoon, officials with the FBI, the Metropolitan Police Department and the Family Research Council would not confirm the reports that the suspect expressed his displeasure with the FRC’s opposition to gay marriage. Law enforcement officials said the matter was still under investigation and it was too early to speak to the individual’s motivation.

The incident could be handled as an incident of domestic terrorism depending on the suspect’s motivations, an FBI spokeswoman told reporters on the scene.

NBC and ABC7 identified him as 28-year-old Floyd Corkins of Virginia. Fox News obtained photos of the man, apparently taken by a witness, that show the suspect in handcuffs and his bloody shirt fully unbuttoned.

Leaders of every major LGBT rights groups signed a statement denouncing the violence.

“We were saddened to hear news of the shooting this morning at the offices of the Family Research Council. Our hearts go out to the shooting victim, his family, and his co-workers.”

“The motivation and circumstances behind today’s tragedy are still unknown, but regardless of what emerges as the reason for this shooting, we utterly reject and condemn such violence. We wish for a swift and complete recovery for the victim of this terrible incident.”

Minnesota: New TV spot released supporting rights of gays to marry

Very sweet and viewer friendly TV spot released in Minnesota by Freedom To Marry. I think it’s terrific that it shows everyday people – straight people – see the logic and compassion in allowing gays to marry.

I also love that it’s pointed out the man is one of our nation’s veterans. He even mentions he fought for ALL Americans to share the same rights and freedoms. My father was a veteran of two wars and he felt the same way.

On November 6, Minnesota voters must decide on a proposed amendment to the state’s constitution that would constitutionally ban same-sex couples from marrying. Same-sex couples are already excluded from marriage through a state statute passed in 1997.

Florida: Jacksonville rejects gay anti-discrimination bill

The Jacksonville City Council voted down a bill that would have protected LGBT residents from housing and employment discrimination by a vote of 10-9.

Seven of the “yes” votes were gained only after a clause protecting transgender individuals was stripped out of the bill.

The city already protects citizens against discrimination based on color, race, sex, national origin, religion, age, marital status or disability.

Councilman Warren Jones filed the bill in May hoping to add protections based on sexual orientation. To gain traction, the language including “gender identity” and “gender expression” had to be removed. In the end, though, that was not enough to pass the bill.

The Florida Times Union noted that the deciding vote Wednesday came from City Councilman Johnny Gaffney, whom had previously had supported the bill when it went through committees. But Gaffney voted against and made no public remarks giving his reason for switching his support.
