Maine: Marriage equality supporters launch pre-emptive strike against NOM

As Mainers United for Marriage gears up for the last weeks of the marriage campaign, they’ve released a new ad that takes on the issue of religious freedom.

Having seen the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage’s playbook in the past and knowing their ads will feature lies about the impact of this law on churches, they’re addressing the attack early.

Smart kids.  See?  We’re catching on…

Seattle Times backs marriage equality in Washington

The Seattle Times has launched its own social media campaign in support of same-sex marriage in Washington state.

Do you support same-sex marriage? Join The Seattle Times editorial board’s social media campaign to approve Referendum 74 on the Nov. 6 ballot. In your Sunday Seattle Times newspaper on Sept. 16, turn to the opinion section. Look for the sign that looks like this [above]. Cut it out. In addition, The News Tribune, the Spokesman Review, and The Columbian all endorsed R-74 and the freedom to marry, Washington United for Marriage reported Monday.

The News Tribune, which serves Tacoma and Pierce County, just south of Seattle, kept the rhetoric simple in its editorial endorsement for Referendum 74: “Why [Washingtonians] should vote yes can be summed up in one word. Equality.”

The Columbian, which serves the greater Vancouver, Wash., area, pointed out that since the state already embraces civil unions, it’s only logical to support full civil marriage for same-sex couples.

The Spokane-based Spokesman Review cites the recycled rhetoric of historic opposition to interracial marriage, which was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1967’s Loving v. Virginia.

“It’s not appropriate for citizens to vote on basic civil rights,” says the Spokesman Review’s editorial board. “But since the question is on the ballot, we hope Washingtonians will affirm the courageous and compassionate law adopted by the Legislature last spring.”

New AP poll: 6 in 10 Americans support same benefits for LGBT couples

The Associated Press and the National Constitution Center this weekend released the findings of wide-ranging poll that covered several issues including political spending and same-sex marriage.

On campaign finance:

Regardless of political leaning, Americans broadly support limits on the amount of money  that individuals and corporations should be able to contribute to election campaigns:
• On individual donations to campaigns, 70% of Democrats, 68% of independents, and 62% of Republicans support limitations.
• On corporate donations to outside organizations, 85% of Democrats believe there should be limits, as do 81% of Republicans and 78% of independents.

 On same-sex benefits:

For the first time, the poll showed that more than six in 10 Americans believe same-sex couples should be entitled to the same government benefits as married couples of the opposite sex. Backing is particularly strong among younger Americans, with 81% of those under age 35 voicing support for equal benefits.

Are we better off than 4 years ago?

Text of the ad:

He keeps saying it…

“This President cannot tell us that you’re better off today than when he took office.” – Mitt Romney

Here’s where we were in 2008:

“Worst financial collapse since the great depression”

“American workers were laid off in numbers not seen in over three decades”

And here’s where we are today…30 months of private sector job growth. Creating 4.6 million new jobs.

We’re not there yet. But the real question is: Whose plan is better for you?

The President’s plan asks millionaires to pay a little more to help invest in a strong middle class, clean energy, and cut the deficit.

Mitt Romney’s plan?

A new two-hundred-fifty-thousand-dollar tax break for multi-millionaires. Roll back regulations on the banks that cratered the economy, and raise taxes on the middle class.

“They want to go back to the same old policies that got us in trouble in the first place” – Bill Clinton

“We’re not going back, we are moving forward.” – President Obama

Forward.

Barbra Streisand – unreleased “Home” from The Wiz

Streisand initially recorded “Home” for The Broadway Album in 1985, which marked a best-selling and hugely-acclaimed return to her theatrical roots after years devoted to singing contemporary pop songs. For undisclosed reasons the track wasn’t included.

Word is, while listening to her powerful 25-year-old vocals on the track, Streisand decided to re-record the bass, drums, and piano in order to fully realize the potential of the more uptempo arrangement of the popular standard, which serves as a sort of answer to “(Somewhere) Over the Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz, the source material for the 1974 musical.

Streisand, a noted perfectionist, even enlisted the same three musicians who had played on the original session for the song to maintain continuity.

The new CD Release Me will be available on September 25. Click here to order on Amazon.
